What began as an adventurous hike through the rugged New Mexico landscape became an exhausting ordeal for one very large dog and an unforgettable rescue for the deputies who came to his aid. Atlas, a nearly 130 pound dog, had made his way along a challenging mountain trail, but eventually his energy disappeared and his body simply could not carry him any farther. With the return journey still ahead, Atlas needed more than encouragement and a little rest. He needed a team willing to climb up the mountain and help bring him safely back down. Open Space deputies responded by heading up the rough trail to reach the tired dog and figure out the safest way to get him off the mountain. Atlas was a particularly challenging rescue because of his size. At nearly 130 pounds, carrying him across steep and uneven terrain required strength, patience, and teamwork.
