Best Dog Vitamins and Supplements for Optimal Health

Before we dive in, a few quick notes. First and most important: always consult with your veterinarian before introducing new supplements into your dog’s diet.

Next, many dog supplements are multitaskers. It’s very common for one product to include several ingredients from this list. For example, a CBD oil chew might also contain glucosamine, MSM, or turmeric for added joint support.

That’s not a bad thing — it just means you’ll want to pay attention to overlap. A smart approach is to make a short list of the supplements you and your vet have decided could benefit your dog. Then, as you compare products, check off which ingredients are already included so you’re not doubling up unintentionally.

How I chose the recommendations

With that in mind, deciding which product to recommend for each supplement was a bit tricky. Many of these are interchangeable. So, had to really think, okay, these 5 products fit 5 different supplements, but which do I feel based on my experience do they do best? Example: Hemp & Hips Plus CBD could go under turmeric, MSM, glucosamine, and so on BUT out of all of the products on my list, they do CBD oil the best. I hope that makes sense.

To make things a little easier, I did put the active ingredients under each product so you can cross-reference and make sure you’re not doubling up anywhere.

CBD Oil Easing Joint Pain & Anxiety

CBD isn’t magic. It’s not a cure-all. But for some dogs, it genuinely takes the edge off. Derived from hemp, CBD is most commonly used for anxiety, chronic pain, and inflammation. I’ve seen it help dogs who pace during storms, struggle with arthritis, or get anxious during travel. It’s a great option if you need both a calming chew and a natural dog arthritis remedy in one.

Potential benefits:

  • May reduce anxiety and stress
  • Supports joint comfort
  • Helps with inflammation
  • May improve overall relaxation

Some dogs respond quickly. Others show subtle changes. And some? Nothing at all. It’s very individual.

Precautions:
Start low and increase slowly. Always use a dog-specific product with third-party testing. If your dog is on other medications, talk to your vet first.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil) for Healthy Skin, Coat, and Immune System

If there’s one supplement that earns its place in a lot of dog households, it’s fish oil. Omega-3s (EPA and DHA) support skin health, joints, heart function, and cognitive health. If your dog gets itchy seasonally or has a dull coat, this is often step one.

Benefits:

  • Supports healthy skin and reduces itchiness
  • Promotes a shinier coat
  • Supports joint health
  • Helps manage inflammation
  • May support brain health in seniors

It’s simple, widely studied, and genuinely useful.

Precautions:
Too much can cause loose stools or weight gain. Choose a high-quality, purified oil to avoid heavy metal contamination. Choose high-quality, purified fish oil to avoid contaminants.

Probiotics for a Healthy Digestive System

Gut health is one of those things you don’t think about… until it’s off.

Probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria to help balance your dog’s digestive system. They’re especially helpful for dogs with sensitive stomachs or those recovering from antibiotics.

Benefits:

  • Supports healthy stool consistency
  • May reduce gas
  • Improves nutrient absorption
  • Supports immune health

They’re also useful for stress-related tummy issues (boarding, travel, big life changes).

Precautions:
Introduce gradually and watch for changes. Not all probiotic strains are equal, so quality matters here.

Prebiotics for Gut Health Support

If probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that live in your dog’s gut, prebiotics are the food that helps those bacteria thrive.

Prebiotics are types of non-digestible fiber that feed the good microbes in the digestive system. Instead of adding new bacteria (like probiotics do), they help support the healthy bacteria that are already there.

You’ll often see prebiotics included in digestive supplements, especially alongside probiotics. Ingredients like inulin, chicory root, and certain fiber blends are common sources.

Benefits:

  • Helps nourish beneficial gut bacteria
  • Supports healthy digestion
  • May improve nutrient absorption
  • Helps maintain overall gut balance

Think of it this way: probiotics add the “good bugs,” while prebiotics help keep them happy and well-fed.

Precautions:
Prebiotics are generally very safe, but introducing too much fiber too quickly can cause gas or mild digestive upset. Start slowly and choose products designed specifically for dogs.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin for Strong & Healthy Joints

This is the classic joint support duo for a reason.

Glucosamine helps maintain cartilage. Chondroitin helps retain cushioning in the joints. Together, they’re commonly used for arthritis, hip dysplasia, and general wear-and-tear in active or aging dogs.

Benefits:

  • Supports cartilage health
  • May reduce stiffness
  • Helps maintain mobility
  • Supports long-term joint function

It’s not an overnight fix. Think steady support, not instant results.

Precautions:
Give it time to work. Always confirm proper dosing with your vet.

Green-Lipped Mussel for Natural Joint Support

Green-lipped mussel has quietly become a favorite in joint supplements.

It contains omega-3s plus naturally occurring compounds that support joint health in a slightly more “whole food” form.

Benefits:

  • Natural anti-inflammatory support
  • Supports joint mobility
  • Helps maintain connective tissue health

Often used alongside glucosamine or as a more natural alternative.

Precautions:
Avoid if your dog has shellfish allergies. Stick to dog-specific formulations.

Medicinal Mushrooms for Immune & Whole-Body Support

Mushrooms are having a moment in the pet world, and not just because they sound trendy. Certain functional mushrooms have been studied for immune modulation, inflammation support, and even potential anti-cancer properties.

We’re not talking about grocery store white button mushrooms. These are species like turkey tail, reishi, shiitake, lion’s mane, and cordyceps.

Benefits:

  • Supports immune system balance (not just stimulation)
  • Antioxidant support
  • May help dogs undergoing cancer treatment (as part of a vet-directed plan)
  • Supports cognitive health (especially lion’s mane)
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

Turkey tail, in particular, has been researched in veterinary oncology settings and is one of the more evidence-backed options.

One thing I like about mushroom blends is that they tend to support overall resilience rather than targeting just one narrow issue. They’re often used for senior dogs, dogs with chronic illness, or those needing immune support.

Precautions:
Always choose products specifically formulated for dogs and ideally tested for purity. Avoid wild-foraged or human supplements unless your vet approves. If your dog has an autoimmune condition or is undergoing treatment for cancer, definitely consult your veterinarian before adding mushrooms.

Vitamin E for Healthy Skin and Coat

Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which basically means it helps protect your dog’s cells from everyday wear and tear. The good news? Most high-quality commercial dog foods already include adequate Vitamin E. So this isn’t usually something you need to rush out and buy. It tends to come up more when a dog is dealing with specific skin issues or when immune support is part of a bigger plan.

Benefits:

  • Supports immune health
  • Promotes healthy skin and coat
  • Works especially well alongside omega-3 fatty acids

Think of it as a supporting character, not the star of the show. It does its job best when it’s part of a balanced approach.

Precautions:
This isn’t a “more is better” situation. Vitamin E is fat-soluble, which means it builds up in the body. Supplement intentionally, not casually, and check with your vet before adding extra on top of a complete diet.

Vitamin B12 for Metabolism & Nervous System Health

Vitamin B12 is involved in metabolism, nerve function, and the production of red blood cells. In other words, it helps convert “I ate breakfast” into “I have energy to chase squirrels.”

You’ll most often see B12 supplements recommended for dogs with digestive issues, absorption problems, or certain medical conditions that interfere with nutrient uptake. Some senior dogs may also benefit if their bodies aren’t absorbing nutrients as efficiently as they once did.

Benefits:

  • Supports healthy energy metabolism
  • Promotes nervous system function
  • Helps maintain proper red blood cell production
  • May support digestive health and nutrient absorption

Like other B vitamins, this isn’t an “instant zoomies” supplement. It’s more foundational than that. If a dog is deficient, you may notice improved energy, appetite, or overall vitality over time. If they aren’t deficient, you probably won’t see dramatic changes (and that’s perfectly normal).

Precautions:
Vitamin B12 is water-soluble, so excess amounts are typically excreted rather than stored in the body. That said, stacking multiple supplements that already contain B12 can still create unnecessary overlap. If your dog is eating a complete and balanced diet, it’s always a good idea to check with your vet before adding extra supplementation.

Calcium & Phosphorus for Bone Health

Calcium and phosphorus are two minerals that work closely together to support strong bones and teeth. They also play roles in muscle function, nerve signaling, and overall skeletal health.

The key thing to know here is that these minerals need to be balanced. Dogs require a specific calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (usually around 1.2–1.4 parts calcium to 1 part phosphorus). Too much of one without the other can actually cause problems rather than solve them.

For most dogs eating a complete commercial diet, this balance is already handled. Where supplementation sometimes comes into play is with home-prepared diets, certain growth stages (especially large-breed puppies), or specific medical conditions where mineral intake needs to be adjusted.

Benefits:

  • Supports strong bones and teeth
  • Plays a role in muscle and nerve function
  • Essential for proper skeletal development in growing dogs

You’ll often see calcium and phosphorus included together in balanced multivitamins or diet-balancing supplements designed for homemade dog food.

Precautions:
This is one supplement category where guessing is a bad idea. Too much calcium, especially in large-breed puppies, can lead to developmental bone problems. Always consult your veterinarian before adding calcium or phosphorus supplements to your dog’s diet.

One We Love: PetAg Calcium Phosphorus Tablets

Active Ingredients: Dicalcium Phosphate, Dried Yeast, Brewers Yeast, Dried Whey, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Magnesium Stearate, Vitamin D3 Supplement.

Turmeric for Easing Inflammation

Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, and in the dog world, it’s most often brought up for inflammation. The active compound, curcumin, is what gets the credit for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

You’ll usually see turmeric added to joint support routines, especially for senior dogs or those dealing with arthritis. Some people also use it for general inflammatory conditions or digestive support.

Now, is it a miracle spice? No. But in the right dog, as part of a broader joint or wellness plan, it can be helpful.

Benefits:

  • Supports joint comfort and mobility
  • Provides antioxidant support
  • May help manage inflammation
  • Sometimes used to support digestive health

One thing worth noting: curcumin isn’t absorbed especially well on its own. Many quality supplements pair it with black pepper extract or formulate it in a way that improves bioavailability. Otherwise, you’re mostly adding yellow powder to your dog’s dinner.

Precautions:
Start small and monitor for digestive upset. Some dogs tolerate it beautifully; others get loose stools. Avoid in pregnant dogs or those with gallbladder issues, and always check with your vet—especially if your dog is on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) for Heart Health

CoQ10 is one of those nutrients most people don’t think about until there’s a specific reason to. It plays a key role in cellular energy production, especially in organs that work hard all the time, like the heart.

In dogs, CoQ10 is most often recommended for those with diagnosed heart conditions. The heart is a muscle that never gets a day off, so anything that supports cellular energy production there can be helpful as part of a larger treatment plan.

It’s not typically something you’d give a young, healthy dog “just because.” It’s more targeted than that.

Benefits:

  • Supports heart muscle function
  • Aids in cellular energy production
  • Provides antioxidant support
  • Often used in cardiac support protocols

Think of it as supportive infrastructure. It helps cells do their job efficiently, particularly in high-demand tissues like the heart.

Precautions:
If your dog has a heart condition, this should absolutely be discussed with your veterinarian. Dosage matters, and it’s often used alongside prescription medications—not in place of them.

One We Love: VETRISCIENCE Healthy Heart

Active Ingredients:  L-Carnitine HCl, L-Taurine, N,N-Dimethylglycine HCl, D-Alpha Tocopheryl Succinate (Vitamin E), Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) Powder Blend, Coenzyme Q10, Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) Powder Blend, Folic Acid, Magnesium (as Magnesium Citrate/Malate), Potassium (as Potassium Citrate/Malate), Selenium (as Sodium Selenite).

Fiber Supplements for digestive health

Fiber doesn’t get flashy marketing, but it does a lot of heavy lifting in your dog’s digestive system.

In simple terms, fiber helps regulate how things move through the gut. It can firm up loose stools, soften hard ones, and generally bring things back to a more predictable routine. (And if you’ve ever done the 6 a.m. “is this normal?” inspection, you know how valuable predictable can be.)

There are different types of fiber, including soluble and insoluble, and they work in slightly different ways. That’s why many dog-specific fiber supplements use a blend. Pumpkin-based options are especially popular because they’re gentle and well tolerated.

Benefits:

  • Helps regulate stool consistency
  • Supports overall digestive health
  • May aid in weight management (fiber can help dogs feel fuller)
  • Can support anal gland health in some dogs

It’s often used for mild constipation, occasional loose stool, or as part of a weight-control plan.

Precautions:
Introduce fiber slowly. Adding too much too fast can cause gas, bloating, or more digestive upset than you started with. And if your dog is having ongoing digestive issues, don’t rely on fiber alone—loop your vet in to rule out underlying causes.

One We Love: Fera Pets Pumpkin Plus

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) for healthy joints

MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound that supports connective tissue health. In the dog world, it’s most commonly included in joint support formulas alongside glucosamine and chondroitin.

Sulfur might not sound glamorous, but it plays a role in maintaining healthy cartilage and connective tissue. MSM is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which is why it’s often added to arthritis and mobility blends.

You probably won’t see MSM sold on its own very often. It tends to work best as part of a joint-support team.

Benefits:

  • Supports joint comfort
  • Helps maintain connective tissue health
  • May reduce inflammation
  • Often included in senior mobility formulas

It’s not a painkiller, and it’s not an overnight solution. Think of it as long-term structural support, especially for aging dogs or highly active breeds that put a lot of mileage on their joints.

Precautions:
MSM is generally well tolerated, but mild digestive upset can happen in some dogs. As with any joint supplement, it’s smart to check with your vet—especially if your dog is already on anti-inflammatory medication.

Multivitamins for Broad Nutritional Support

Multivitamins sound like the obvious solution, right? Just cover all the bases and call it a day.

Sometimes that makes sense. Sometimes it doesn’t.

If your dog is eating a high-quality, complete commercial diet, they’re already getting a carefully balanced blend of vitamins and minerals. In that case, a multivitamin may not add much. Where they can be helpful is with homemade diets (that aren’t professionally formulated), picky eaters, dogs with limited ingredient diets, or certain health conditions that create higher nutrient demands.

Think of a multivitamin as a gap-filler, not a supercharger.

Benefits:

  • Provides broad nutrient coverage
  • Helps fill minor nutritional gaps
  • Convenient all-in-one option
  • Can support overall vitality in specific cases

They’re especially useful when you’re not 100% confident that every nutritional base is covered.

Precautions:
This is where label reading really matters. It’s easy to accidentally double up on nutrients if you’re also giving individual supplements (like extra zinc, Vitamin E, or B complex). More is not better when it comes to fat-soluble vitamins or certain minerals. If your dog is on a complete diet, talk to your vet before layering on a multivitamin “just in case.”

One We Love: Native Pets The Daily

How to Choose a High-Quality Dog Supplement

The supplement industry (for humans and pets) isn’t regulated the same way prescription medications are. That means quality can vary. A lot.

If you’re going to add something to your dog’s bowl, it’s worth taking a minute to check a few things:

  • Look for third-party testing. Reputable brands will test for purity and potency. If a company won’t tell you what’s in it or how it’s tested, that’s a red flag.
  • Check for dog-specific formulas. Human supplements aren’t automatically safe for dogs. Dosing is different, and some additives (like xylitol) are dangerous.
  • Avoid vague “proprietary blends.” You want to know how much of each active ingredient your dog is getting. Transparency matters.
  • Keep it targeted. Don’t throw five supplements at a problem at once. Identify the need, choose the right support, and give it time to work.
  • Loop in your vet. Especially if your dog has a medical condition or is on medication. Supplements can interact with prescriptions. “Natural” doesn’t automatically mean harmless.

In short: choose intentionally. Not impulsively.

Final Thoughts

Supplements can absolutely play a role in supporting your dog’s health — but they work best when they’re purposeful.

Most healthy dogs on high-quality diets don’t need a cabinet full of powders and chews. But aging joints, sensitive stomachs, skin issues, heart conditions, or recovery periods? That’s where targeted support can make a noticeable difference.

The key is knowing why you’re adding something — and choosing quality over hype.

Your dog doesn’t need everything on this list. But if they need something on this list, the right supplement can quietly improve comfort, resilience, and overall well-being.

And honestly, when you see them moving easily, eating well, and feeling good, that’s what matters.
