Depends on what the allergy is. If you have not already, I’d recommend allergy testing so you know exactly what they can and can’t have. Grasses and trees, on the other hand, are hard to control.

ACANA Grain Free Dry Dog Food Red Meat Recipe

The vet said most dogs with allergies are usually allergic to grains and chicken. So I went over to Acana and later Field and Forest grain-free, and either fish or lamb flavors. Also, have to be careful with treats. It definitely made a difference – she no longer got hives all over her body.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Best Foods for Bull Terriers with Allergies

1. What are the most common food allergies in Bull Terriers?

Bull Terriers are prone to food allergies related to proteins such as beef, chicken, and dairy. Grains like corn, wheat, and soy can also be culprits. Identifying the trigger requires an elimination diet or allergy testing.

2. Which ingredients should I avoid in my Bull Terrier’s diet?

Avoid common allergens like artificial preservatives (BHA, BHT), fillers (corn, soy, wheat), by-products, and high-fat animal proteins. Stick with limited-ingredient diets that use novel or hypoallergenic proteins like duck, venison, or fish.

3. What are the best protein sources for allergic Bull Terriers?

Novel proteins such as duck, salmon, kangaroo, rabbit, or lamb are often well-tolerated. Hydrolyzed proteins—broken down to reduce allergenicity—are also used in prescription allergy diets.

4. Is grain-free food better for Bull Terriers with allergies?

Not always. While some Bull Terriers are sensitive to grains, many are allergic to the protein source instead. A grain-free diet may help, but it’s important to focus on the full ingredient list and consult with a vet.

5. How can I tell if my Bull Terrier has a food allergy?

Signs include chronic itching, red or inflamed skin, recurring ear infections, paw licking, and gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea. These symptoms often improve after switching to an allergy-friendly diet.

6. Are homemade diets safe for Bull Terriers with allergies?

Yes, but only if carefully balanced. Homemade diets allow complete control over ingredients but must include all essential nutrients. Work with a veterinary nutritionist to create a safe, allergy-friendly meal plan.

7. How long does it take to see improvement after switching foods?

It can take 6–8 weeks to see noticeable improvement in allergy symptoms. During this time, avoid feeding any treats or foods outside the prescribed diet to prevent reintroducing allergens.
