There are three things our family is thankful for today, September 11th. Most people focus on the sadness and all the things that happened but we also have some happiness on this day in our house.
September 11th was way before my time. We hear about it all the time and it is a day no one will ever forget. What happened is simply unimaginable but it happened. Mom is very thankful she was living on Lake Constance in Southern Germany at the time. She was taking a computer class and first heard a plane hit one of the towers when she got in her car to drive home. It’s seven hours later over there. She didn’t think too much of it because she always thought planes would one day hit a tall building as they seem to fly so close to them. As she drove things evolved and she realized it wasn’t an accident.
After having to make a grocery store stop, she raced home and glued herself to CNN for a few days. She is thankful she was in Germany and not the US as she would have been really stuck. It was bad in Germany, but not like it would have been had she been in the US. She’s also thankful for CNN as it was the best way to stay informed at that time.
Five years later, the GBGV litter Mom was waiting for was born. She wanted a GBGV. They were and still are, not easy to come by. Emma was in that litter but Mom was a bit concerned with her having a birthday on such a tragic date. In 2006, digital cameras were still rather new. Mom doesn’t have any photos of Emma until she was nine months old.
Emma turned out to be the dog that changed Mom’s life forever. She is in love with our breed, and Emma is credited with starting our blog and getting us all involved in dog sports. Mom read about nose work on a blogging friends blog and that started the whole sports thing. Without Emma, we would all be couch potatoes. Don’t get me wrong, that isn’t a bad thing but Mom is so happy with blogging, photography, and all the sports and traveling we now do.
The final thankful we have for this day is that it is my Gotcha Day! Yes, our breeder had so many of us from the litter of fourteen, she drove up here to show some of us girls to Mom. Of course, Mom could not say no to a puppy! I wrapped myself around her emotions so fast she didn’t know what hit her. My sisters kept coming by to bug me which only solidified my position as the best puppy to adopt.
After an hour or two, it was a done deal and I was staying with Emma and Katie. Emma was a bit miffed that her birthday was crashed by a bunch of puppies but she still got to celebrate. She never did forgive me or mom for having her birthday, in her mind, ruined.
Today is a very sad and tragic day to never forget, but life always moves on and one needs to find the good in the bad and hold onto it. Our good is all coincidental, but we are happy we have some bright lights on an otherwise dark day.
