Senior Dog Rescued From Arizona Canal Finds Her Forever Home
On June 16, a passerby in Phoenix, Arizona, came across a heartbreaking sight that could have ended in tragedy. A 10-year-old dog was struggling in a canal, fighting to stay afloat. Without immediate help, her chances of survival were slim. Thankfully, the quick actions of the Phoenix Fire Department and the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) changed her fate forever.

Emergency Animal Medical Technician Hunter Stribling responded alongside fire crews, and together they devised a plan to safely reach the frightened senior pup. Using a ladder and specialized AHS rescue tools, they carefully maneuvered toward the dog, eventually guiding her into a cart and lifting her to safety. Once she was finally on dry land, the fear in her eyes melted away, replaced by wagging tails and grateful relief. The rescue team later named her Dorothea.

The details of how Dorothea ended up in the canal remain unknown, but her condition told the story of hardship. Once back at the shelter, veterinarians discovered she was dehydrated, hungry, and covered in ticks. Fortunately, her injuries were minor, though she required dental surgery to remove fractured teeth. Despite everything, doctors remarked that she was in surprisingly good health given the circumstances.
During her recovery at AHS, Dorothea’s gentle nature quickly began to shine. She was pampered with a spa day from the grooming team, and soon the senior dog who had nearly lost her life was enjoying cuddles, treats, and human affection. Staff members described her as a sweet soul who craved love and gave it back tenfold.

After a month in the shelter’s care, Dorothea’s story took the happiest turn of all: she was adopted. Now living in Youngtown, Arizona, she has found her forever family and will spend her golden years surrounded by safety, comfort, and endless love.
Dorothea’s journey from near-tragedy to triumph is a reminder of the lifesaving power of compassion and teamwork. Thanks to the quick action of first responders, the dedication of animal welfare professionals, and the kindness of her new family, this resilient senior pup now has the chance to enjoy the peace and happiness she has always deserved.
