A couple from Los Angeles is sharing a serious warning with other pet owners after their beloved dog tested positive for methamphetamine following a simple morning walk in their North Hollywood neighborhood.

Their four-year-old German Shepherd-Husky mix, Atreyu, suddenly began showing unusual behavior shortly after returning home from his daily outing. His owners, Carla and Billy, immediately sensed something was wrong. “He just wasn’t able to settle down. His eyes were moving in a weird way,” Carla recalled, describing the frightening moment when their usually calm dog became restless and disoriented.

Alarmed and unsure of what was happening, the couple rushed Atreyu to their local veterinarian. There, the medical team discovered his heart rate was dangerously high, and his body temperature had spiked beyond normal levels. A toxicology test later confirmed the cause, methamphetamine exposure.

Veterinarian Dr. Amos, who treated Atreyu, said this kind of incident has become increasingly common in urban areas. “Anywhere there might be people using drugs, there’s a chance residue or substances get left behind,” he explained. “Dogs can easily ingest something dangerous without their owners realizing it.”

Billy suspects Atreyu may have picked up something off the ground during their walk. “He grabbed something super fast, and I couldn’t tell what it was,” he said. “I tried to stop him, but by the time I reached him, it was too late.”

A family in Seattle dropped their dog, a black lab named Mitch, off at a local kennel one day, not expecting anything unusual to occur. But Mitch's stay at the kennel ended with an employee brutally kicking and punching him - to the point of death.

This wasn’t Atreyu’s first encounter with toxic substances. A few months earlier, he accidentally consumed marijuana at a nearby park, leaving him lethargic and confused. However, this time the effects were far more serious. “Meth exposure can be deadly,” Dr. Amos warned. “The danger depends on the amount ingested and the dog’s size.”

Fortunately, the vet team acted quickly, administering fluids and keeping Atreyu under close observation until his condition stabilized. After several tense hours, he began to recover, and his vital signs slowly returned to normal. Carla expressed her relief, saying, “Seeing your pet go through something like that is terrifying. You just never know what’s lying around.”

The couple is now urging other dog owners to stay alert during walks and to consider investing in pet insurance, noting that Atreyu’s medical emergencies have been financially overwhelming. “It saved us from huge bills,” Carla said, encouraging others to prepare for the unexpected.

Experts advise keeping dogs on short leashes in public areas, avoiding alleys or neglected parks, and watching carefully for warning signs of poisoning, such as tremors, rapid heartbeat, or restlessness.

While Atreyu’s story ended with a full recovery, veterinarians emphasize that many similar cases do not. They hope that increased awareness will help prevent other families from facing the same terrifying experience.
