Abused Dog Finds Healing and Confidence Thanks to Foster Kittens
Four years ago, Claudia Papp welcomed a foster dog from Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue into her home. The dog, named Chapo, had endured a painful past — abused, neglected, and left on a shelter’s euthanasia list. When Papp first met him, he was in rough shape, battling fleas, worms, a skin infection, and fractured teeth. Yet even more striking than his physical wounds was the depth of his fear.

In the early days, Chapo wouldn’t even approach Papp. “He probably didn’t even walk toward me for at least five days,” she recalled to The Dodo. On the very first night, he stood at the back door, staring silently as though searching for a way to escape. Weeks passed, and his anxiety lingered so strongly that he refused to step outside at all.
Papp had fostered 47 dogs before, but Chapo was different. His gentleness and vulnerability captured her heart, making him her very first “foster fail.” He became a permanent member of her family, even though his fears still held him back. That is, until a surprising little helper entered the picture.
One day, Papp brought home a foster kitten named Cecily. Instantly, Chapo was captivated by her energy and curiosity. Cecily, in turn, trusted his calm presence. Their unlikely bond sparked something within Chapo. Just two weeks after meeting Cecily, he shocked Papp by stepping outside on his own — a milestone she thought might never come.

From then on, kittens became the key to Chapo’s healing. He began mirroring their playful behavior — rolling on his back, stretching beside them, and even joining in their antics. The kittens’ liveliness seemed to chip away at his fears, while Chapo’s gentle demeanor offered comfort to sick or struggling fosters.
“It was just something about her that gave him this level of confidence he’d never had the entire time he’d been with me and probably his entire life,” Papp said of Cecily.
Over time, Chapo transformed from a withdrawn, traumatized pup into a loving, confident dog who thrived in the company of his feline friends. Today, surrounded by kittens that continue to brighten his days, he has spent more years in safety and love than in the darkness of his past.

For Papp, Chapo’s story is a daily reminder of resilience, healing, and the unexpected ways animals can lift each other up. What began as a heartbreaking rescue has blossomed into a beautiful journey — one where a dog once too scared to step outside now enjoys the warmth of family, friendship, and joy.
