For a small homeless dog struggling to survive in war-torn Ukraine, finding something to eat could mean the difference between another hungry night and making it through one more day. With no warm bed waiting for her and no family known to be searching for her, she learned to depend on instinct. The little dog, now called Vtsilila, which means “survivor” in Ukrainian, discovered one source of food she could reach: eggs. Taking them kept her belly from going empty, but her desperate attempts to survive eventually put her in danger. Across Ukraine, countless homeless dogs face similarly uncertain circumstances. Food can be difficult to find, familiar surroundings may no longer be safe, and animals separated from their families are left to navigate conditions they do not understand.
