Bear, a Cane Corso from Mobile, Alabama, endured an unimaginable year wandering the streets with his head trapped in a plastic box. The box, likely the lid of a trash can from a nearby park or restaurant, had become stuck as Bear searched for food. This unfortunate situation left him unable to eat or drink properly, making his survival nothing short of miraculous. Terrified of humans, Bear avoided all attempts to help him, making rescue efforts incredibly challenging.
His large size rendered traditional traps ineffective, and his fear kept him from letting anyone approach. Spotted repeatedly over the course of months, Bear became the focus of a massive rescue mission involving the City of Mobile Animal Services and the Mobile County Animal Shelter.
After numerous failed attempts, the team managed to remove the plastic box from Bear’s head. Unfortunately, the frightened dog bolted before they could secure him with a leash. Undeterred, the rescuers regrouped and launched a coordinated effort to bring him to safety. Eventually, their persistence paid off, and Bear was captured and transported to the shelter.
Once there, Bear’s transformation began. The shelter staff, who quickly grew to adore the gentle giant, showered him with care and affection. “The staff absolutely LOVE him and he is being treated like a king. He is very sweet and has a long happy life ahead of him,” wrote Martin Miller, one of the dedicated volunteers who played a key role in Bear’s rescue.
During his stay, Bear blossomed. His wary demeanor softened, and he bonded with Martin, who felt an undeniable connection to the resilient dog. When Bear’s stray hold ended, Martin didn’t hesitate—he applied to adopt him. Now officially a part of the Miller family, Bear has found the love and security he’d been missing for so long.

Not only does Bear have a forever home, but he’s also taken on an inspiring new role. As an ambassador for the City of Mobile Animal Services, Bear spends his days with Martin at the shelter, encouraging others to adopt stray animals. After a year of loneliness and struggle, Bear’s story has come full circle—he’s not only found a family but is helping others find theirs too.
