Sarah Jennings Sleime, a dedicated volunteer with the Greater Charlotte SPCA, hadn’t planned on making a life-changing trip that day. But on a spontaneous visit to the animal shelter, she encountered a dog that would leave an unforgettable mark on her heart.

“I was walking through the kennels when I saw her sitting there—slumped over almost like a human,” Sleime shared on Instagram. It was clear that Cinnamon had recently given birth, but her puppies were nowhere in sight. She seemed lost, looking around as if searching for them, whimpering softly.

“The shelter staff suspected she had been kept in confinement and used for breeding. She’s obviously had multiple litters,” Sleime told The Dodo.

When Sleime bent down to speak to Cinnamon, the dog’s soulful eyes filled with tears. “It was the craziest thing,” she recalled. “She wasn’t just sad—she was grieving.”

Although the SPCA wasn’t able to take in larger dogs due to a lack of foster homes, Sleime felt compelled to act. She recorded a video of Cinnamon’s tearful expression and posted it on Facebook. The response was overwhelming—within just two days, the video had been viewed over 1 million times and shared by more than 20,000 people.

Hundreds of people flooded Sleime’s inbox with messages, all wanting to adopt Cinnamon and give her the love she so desperately needed. Among them was Meghan Connor Shelton from Charlotte, North Carolina.

“I have a special place in my heart for Pit Bulls. They’re such a misunderstood breed,” Shelton explained. “When I saw that video of her literally crying in the cage, I couldn’t hold back my tears. My kids cried. My husband saw it and immediately agreed to go meet her the next day.”

That night, Shelton’s family could hardly sleep. They couldn’t stop thinking about Cinnamon and the life she had endured. First thing in the morning, they arrived at the shelter, eager to meet her.

The moment they laid eyes on Cinnamon, they knew she was meant to be part of their family. “It was love at first sight. She tugged at our heartstrings,” Shelton said. To their relief, Rosie and Blu bonded instantly. “You never know how two dogs will react to each other, but they just sat together, tails wagging,” Shelton recalled. From that moment on, the two became inseparable best friends. Rosie finally had a companion to help her heal from her past trauma.

As Rosie adjusted to her new home, her personality flourished. She quickly learned what it felt like to be truly loved. She had warm beds, delicious meals, and endless affection from her new family. Walks became her favorite part of the day, and her eyes, once filled with sorrow, now sparkled with happiness.

One of her quirkiest and most endearing traits? “When she gets excited, she snorts like a little pig,” her new family shared with a smile. “She makes us laugh every single day.”

Rosie’s viral video didn’t just change her life—it also had a ripple effect. Many other dogs at the shelter found loving homes thanks to the attention Cinnamon’s story received. Families who came to adopt her ended up saving other shelter dogs in need.
