As our dogs get older, a lot of us start thinking less about “fixing problems” and more about overall canine longevity (in other words, helping them live as long as possible). We notice the little shifts first: a slower recovery after exercise, weight gain that seems to appear out of nowhere, less stamina on walks, or that slightly longer pause before jumping onto the couch. Aging sneaks up quietly like that.
So, when I came across HANS™, I was immediately intrigued because it approaches aging and wellness from a very different angle than most dog supplements. Instead of focusing only on joints or skin or digestion, HANS looks at hormone support and healthy aging together, particularly for spayed and neutered dogs.
Honestly, it’s one of the most unique canine wellness products I’ve seen in a while. Keep reading for my full review.
What Is HANS?
HANS is a daily wellness chew designed to support healthy aging, mobility, metabolism, recovery, and overall canine longevity in dogs. The company’s entire concept centers around the hormonal changes dogs experience after being spayed or neutered. HANS was inspired by advances and successes in the human hormone clinical space.
The formula uses elk velvet antler along with elk liver, ingredients chosen for their naturally occurring growth factors, nutrients, peptides, and hormone-supportive compounds.
Now, before anyone starts picturing some sort of weird “immortality chew,” that’s not really what this is. HANS isn’t claiming to magically reverse aging. The idea is more about supporting the body systems that naturally change over time, especially after sterilization.
If you check out the Science Behind HANS, it talks a lot about how removing reproductive hormones can affect things like:
- metabolism
- muscle maintenance
- energy levels
- behavior
- inflammation
- mobility
- recovery
- overall aging processes
If you’ve ever had a dog suddenly gain weight after being spayed or neutered, you’ve probably seen at least part of that firsthand.
Freya went nuts for HANS before I even opened the box! What Makes HANS Different?
Somewhere around middle age, dogs start doing the same thing humans do: slowing down a little, gaining weight more easily, and making us Google weird hormone questions at 11 PM. Like “do dogs go through menopause?” By the way, the answer to that is no, but hormonal changes in dogs are very real, especially after spaying and neutering.
That’s part of what makes HANS such an interesting supplement. Instead of focusing only on joints or senior support, it approaches healthy aging through hormone-related wellness and long-term vitality support.
Most senior dog supplements follow a pretty familiar formula:
- glucosamine
- chondroitin
- omega fatty acids
- plus maybe some other pain-relieving ingredients
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Freya takes a daily joint support supplement that works wonders for her pain. That’s the thing, though: we already have a favorite. I don’t need another one. I need something that supports other aspects of canine longevity. That’s why I love how HANS takes a different approach by focusing heavily on hormone-related wellness and bioactive compounds from elk velvet antler.
Elk velvet antler has actually been studied for things like mobility, inflammation support, recovery, endurance, and healthy aging pathways. Some of the research they cite specifically looks at dogs with osteoarthritis, while other studies focus on broader biological effects tied to growth factors like IGF-1 and TGF-β (for those who haven’t been binging Greek mythology books lately like I have, that weird B looking thing means “beta.”).
Again, this is one of those things where I think balance matters. The research is interesting and super promising, but it’s also not the same thing as saying, “this chew scientifically turns your senior dog into a puppy again.” HANS actually does a better job than many supplements by grounding their claims in real research.
I really appreciate how HANS addresses something a lot of dog owners already suspect: dogs often change after spay/neuter in ways that go beyond reproduction. Freya definitely did.

Real-World Review: Freya’s Thoughts (Which Were Extremely Intense)
Let’s start with the important part: Freya lost her mind over these. And I mean completely lost her mind.
I’ve tested enough dog supplements to know that “tasty chew” sometimes translates to “Freya snubs this and demands an alternative.” Let me tell you, that makes it just SUPER fun when it’s heartworm pill time. That definitely wasn’t the case with HANS. The second I opened the box, Freya became deeply emotionally invested in its contents. She frantically pawed at the package and acted like I had personally betrayed her by enforcing the one-chew-per-day rule.
So the taste factor? Very high marks there. I had to hide the box from her! I was actually surprised by how crazy she went over them because it’s not like they smell or anything. Yeah, yeah, I know, her nose is a bazillion times stronger than mine. She can smell a bear a mile away (literally), so I guess it makes sense that she can smell the chews through the box.
As for the wellness side, the biggest reason I wanted to try HANS was the metabolism and healthy aging angle.
Freya has struggled with weight gain ever since being spayed, despite being an incredibly active dog. Now that she’s officially in her senior years, I’m a lot more focused on long-term vitality than quick fixes. I’m thinking about:
- maintaining muscle
- supporting mobility
- helping her stay energetic and comfortable
- supporting healthy metabolism
That’s where HANS feels different from standard “senior dog supplements.” It’s less about reacting to visible decline and more about supporting healthy aging proactively.
I also like that the formula is relatively straightforward instead of being packed with 47 trendy ingredients that sound like they were chosen by spinning a wellness bingo wheel.
Thank goodness they’re in individual bubbles because Freya wanted them ALL right away. How Long Does it Take to See Results?
- Taste/appetite enthusiasm: Immediate. Freya clearly had this phase covered within approximately 0.4 seconds.
- Energy or general vitality: Potentially within 2–4 weeks, if your dog responds well.
- Mobility/recovery improvements: Often more like 4–8 weeks, similar to joint supplements.
- Weight/metabolism support: Probably the slowest and most subtle category, especially in a spayed senior dog. I’d think in terms of “easier weight maintenance over time” rather than sudden slimming.
- Healthy aging benefits: This is the hardest one to visibly measure because it’s more about long-term support than a dramatic before-and-after moment.
A lot also depends on what issue you’re hoping to improve. If a dog is mildly sluggish and inflammation is part of the problem, you may notice pep sooner. If you’re hoping it magically overrides age-related metabolism changes, that’s a taller order. (If science invents that chew for middle-aged humans too, we’ll all be lining up.)
One thing I actually appreciate about the HANS positioning is that they frame it more around supporting systems involved in aging rather than promising obvious transformation. That tends to be a greener flag in the supplement world than “your dog will act five years younger by Tuesday.”
Is HANS Worth Trying?
If you’re looking for a traditional joint supplement, there are certainly cheaper options out there.
But HANS isn’t really trying to be “just another joint chew.” The focus here is broader: healthy aging, metabolic support, vitality, recovery, and hormone-related wellness for spayed and neutered dogs.
That makes it stand out in a sea of supplements that all basically blur together after a while.
I especially think this kind of product makes sense for:
- middle-aged and senior dogs
- dogs struggling with post-spay/neuter weight changes
- active dogs needing recovery support
- owners interested in proactive wellness and longevity support
- people who want to support aging before obvious decline starts
It’s one of the most unique dog wellness concepts I’ve come across recently, and based on Freya’s reaction, she would very much like me to reorder immediately.
