Happiness Is Sniffing Practice On A Nice Day

Happiness is sniffing practice on a nice day at our house. Sniff season is about to explode, so Mom took me and Olivia to do some practice. There was a lot of wind and temps were around fifty degrees. Mom set up three searches, a single hide, one with three hides, and one with five. We each got to do all three but Mom only did photos on two of the six total searches. Trying to hold a dog, walk, and take photos with her sling was not easy.

Olivia started off with the single hide challenge. It began in the parking lot and the hide was about three to four feet up on the pole with the arrow in the distance. The trick is to catch odor from a distance and be able to track it down. The wind was blowing pretty much at the parking lot.

At first Olivia was not sure where to go, but she spun around a bit and headed in a couple different directions before she picked up the scent.

Once she caught the direction, she cruised to the pole in a rather zig zag fashion. Olivia is good at this kind of thing. She was tall enough to get her nose right on that tin on the pole. From start to finish, it took her maybe a minute at most.

Mom got some photos of me with the five hides. The wind is a challenge, but Mom also placed hides fairly close together to present another challenge. The area was the trash cans, bleachers and the next dugout wall.

I hit the garbage cans first. It is not always easy to know which one with the wind blowing so crazily. While I work on my sniffing ability, Mom works on her patience.

Patience and hard work both pay off as I figure out which can it is actually on. Yay, treats for me!

I worked hard and found three more hides, and now I am looking for that fifth one. Mom says it is a “bad” hide as it isn’t moving like the others but I need to learn to figure it out. You can see it in the corner to the left of my head. We are scent hounds and we really don’t use our eyes to search. Mom always finds that fascinating!

Next off I check up a bit higher to see where the scent cone is. Mom says it is hard to watch me not use my eyes, but my nose is my best tool and I will figure it out with my nose.

Ah ha! Here it is. I found it and now I get more food! Olivia and I both had a lot of fun at our sniffing practice. We hope to practice more, and maybe with Madison too. Sniffing makes us happy!
