Heartbroken Dog Chases Car After Being Abandoned in Parking Lot

Some stories leave an entire community shaken, and Leno’s was one of them. Late one evening in Lorain, Ohio, a frightened Shepherd mix found himself suddenly alone after the people he trusted drove away and never looked back. Surveillance cameras captured the heartbreaking moment as the confused dog ran after the departing vehicle, desperately trying to keep up. What followed was several days of fear, uncertainty, and loneliness for the abandoned pup, but it also revealed the compassion of strangers who refused to give up on him and ultimately helped change his future.

For those who later watched the footage, the scene was difficult to forget.

“It was heartbreaking to see that dog chasing that car,” said Denise Willis, a former humane officer who now works at Skate World.

The video showed Leno wandering the area after the car vanished. Unsure of what had happened, he appeared to search for the people he trusted most. At one point, he was seen approaching vehicles and jumping toward them, seemingly hoping his owner would return.

Willis and other employees immediately became concerned for the dog’s safety. Located near busy West Erie Avenue, the area posed significant risks for a scared animal running through traffic. Throughout the weekend, employees made repeated attempts to rescue him, but Leno was too frightened to let anyone get close.

A Community Refuses to Give Up

Just across the street from the skating rink, resident Emily Farley had also been trying to help the abandoned dog. Day after day, she searched for ways to earn his trust.

By Monday morning, her patience finally paid off.

Using food and a calm approach, Farley slowly coaxed Leno closer until she was able to secure a leash around him. After several days alone, the exhausted dog was finally safe.

Farley said it quickly became clear how deeply the experience had affected him.

“He is traumatized. He won’t leave my side,” she said.

Though physically unharmed, Leno appeared emotionally shaken. After being abandoned and left to fend for himself, he clung closely to the person who showed him kindness. His behavior reflected the fear, confusion, and stress he had endured during his days on the street.

Farley contacted the Lorain Police Department, and arrangements were made for Leno to be transferred to the Lorain County Dog Kennel, where he could receive proper care and attention.

As news of the incident spread, community members rallied around the dog. Many shared information online and helped investigators identify the person believed to be responsible. According to the Lorain Police Department, tips from the public led authorities to a 34-year-old Lorain woman. She was cited on misdemeanor charges that included animal abandonment, failure to register a dog, and failure to maintain rabies immunization requirements.

Both Willis and Farley expressed frustration over what happened to the gentle dog.

Farley hoped those responsible would never again be entrusted with an animal’s care, while Willis said she hoped the case would be pursued in court.

Despite the painful circumstances surrounding his abandonment, Leno’s story did not end there.

In an update, the Lorain Police Department announced that Leno had been safely rescued and was receiving proper care. Officials also thanked Emily Starr, who helped keep him safe until he could be transferred to the kennel.

The department praised the community members who shared information and helped bring attention to the case, noting that animal welfare remains an important priority.

For Leno, the future now looks far brighter than it did on the night he was left behind. While Farley wished she could give him a permanent home, she already cares for several pets and lacks the space for another.

After days of fear, uncertainty, and heartbreak, Leno is finally safe. And thanks to the kindness of strangers who refused to look away, he now has a chance at the happy future he has been waiting for.
