Investigators allege much of that money was never used to help the animals. Instead, the funds were reportedly diverted for personal use while the dogs continued suffering in terrible conditions.
One dog, named Russet, became the heartbreaking symbol of the investigation.
In early 2025, Russet appeared repeatedly in fundraising videos shared online. Viewers were told he needed urgent medical treatment, and his painful condition drew sympathy from thousands of people worldwide. But as investigators dug deeper, disturbing questions emerged about how the dog became so severely injured in the first place.
Veterinary experts who later assessed Russet’s wounds reportedly concluded that his injuries did not appear accidental. The documentary suggests the suffering may have been deliberately inflicted to create more emotionally powerful content for donations.
Despite eventually undergoing complex surgery, Russet sadly did not survive.
His death devastated many followers who had believed they were contributing to a genuine rescue effort. For some supporters, learning the truth left them feeling heartbroken, angry, and betrayed.
A Growing Movement Against Online Animal Exploitation

In some cases, members have reportedly carried out unofficial rescue missions to remove dogs from dangerous environments.
The documentary highlights the emotional toll these situations take not only on the animals but also on donors who believed they were helping save lives.
For many viewers, the most painful part is realizing the dogs may have suffered longer because their condition generated more sympathy and financial support.
At the same time, the situation in Mityana reflects deeper social struggles within the community. Local residents interviewed in the documentary expressed frustration toward the alleged scammers, saying their actions have damaged the town’s reputation internationally.
Some residents also pointed to widespread unemployment and limited economic opportunities among young people in the area. While many condemned the exploitation of animals, others acknowledged the desperation that can push vulnerable individuals toward harmful schemes.
Even so, animal advocates argue that no financial hardship can justify cruelty.
