Who wants to play Monopoly or Macombopoly? Did you know Monopoly was originally called The Landlord’s Game when it was created in 1903? Lizzie Magie is the creator of the well known game of Monopoly and she is from Macomb, Illinois. To honor her, they have turned their downtown courthouse square into a real life Monopoly game you can play with the Macombopoly App.
Each corner of the square has a Monopoly related statue. One is the giant Monopoly board. The next is a statue of Lizzie Magie holding a Monopoly board.
A third corner of the square has a set of dice. They actually can be spun around if you want to give that a try.
Our favorite corner statue is the stovepipe hat. Mom says we look adorable under the hat.
Are you ready to go? Then find the Go square and get things rolling. Go to eATLAS to download the Macombopoly App for free and play the game.
Check out some of the properties like Illinois Avenue.
Maybe you will land on one of the railroads like Illinois Zephyr.
Uh oh, looks like you must head to jail! Do not pass Go, do not collect $200!
You’re in jail, now what? Take a selfie of yourself behind bars perhaps? We are far to short for that but they do have a step in jail to boost humans up high enough to look out from behind the bars.
Sprung from jail, we continue on to Jackson Street.
Across from the first railroad, we run into the other railroad M & W.
The last property we came upon was Lafayette Street.
We do love Macomb. What a great idea they have here for honoring Lizzie Magie and the game she started that has been around for over one hundred years. If you are in the area, stop by and check it out, maybe download the app and have some more fun! Playing this game gets you outside. It may not be nature like in the woods but it is outdoors and there are plants and things all around.
I’m joining my friends at Living Laughing and Barking in Our Backyard for their Nature Friday blog hop.
