Abby’s Journey From Pain to Playfulness

Abby, a tiny and frightened puppy, was discovered trembling inside a small box after being surrendered by her previous owner. Her face was covered in painful blisters, and her condition was heartbreaking. Yet even in her weakened state, Abby’s little tail never stopped wagging. She had an incredible will to live.

For the first two weeks in her foster home with Dina, Abby’s health showed no signs of improvement. The blisters on her face grew worse, and she withdrew from the world. She cried in her kennel and resisted being touched, too uncomfortable and scared to trust. Concerned, Dina brought her to the vet, where a series of blood tests, skin tests, and exams were performed to uncover the cause of her suffering.

With treatment and care, a remarkable transformation began. Abby slowly started to come out of her shell. She played with other dogs, wagged her tail with excitement when Dina entered the room, and even learned to sit for treats. Her appetite returned in full force — so much so that she cheekily tried to snatch food from Dina’s plate.

Wanting to nurture her playful spirit, Dina introduced Abby to fetch and filled the house with toys. Abby delighted in pulling cotton out of pillows, running through the house, and exploring everything she could find. Walks became one of her favorite activities, and her curiosity gave way to joy.

Although her health improved, Abby was left with visible reminders of her struggles. The scabs caused her to lose all the hair on her head, and as her adult teeth came in with an underbite, she gained a unique look — one that made it seem like she was always smiling.

To Dina, none of this mattered. Each small victory, each wag of Abby’s tail, filled her with pride. Abby had gone from a sick, heartbroken puppy to a happy, playful companion with an irresistible personality.
