Monster Charged After Dogs Left in Heat Without Food or Water for Days

A man from Carnegie, Pennsylvania, is facing serious charges after police say he left his three dogs outside for an entire week without food or water during extreme summer heat.

The investigation began when concerned neighbors contacted authorities. They had heard the dogs barking and saw them chained outside without any relief from the sun. Harjap Mann, a local resident, described the heartbreaking scene. “They were barking, but everybody walking by was trying to feed them,” he said. “It was so hot. They’ve been through this summer after summer.”

Police arrived at the property belonging to James Lewis and found all three dogs in distress. They were chained in outdoor sheds with no access to water, visibly suffering. Covered in flies, two of the dogs had open, bleeding wounds. One dog had desperately dug a space under the porch to try to escape the sun and find shade.

According to investigators, the dogs could barely remain on their feet. They would stand for short periods before collapsing, panting heavily in the intense heat. Animal control officers were called in immediately and removed all three animals from the property.

All of the dogs had dangerously high body temperatures, well over 100 degrees. One dog’s condition was critical—its body temperature had spiked to 110 degrees. It was suffering from brain swelling and organ failure. Despite rescue efforts, the dog began seizing and had to be humanely euthanized.

“It’s terrible,” said Mann. “They should be treated just like human beings. They have feelings.”

Authorities say this wasn’t the first time they had been to the home. Police had previously responded to reports of animal neglect involving Lewis. Now, James Lewis is facing three counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. He has been released on bond as the case proceeds.

The story has reignited outrage over the ongoing issue of animal neglect and abuse, prompting many in the community to call for stricter enforcement and harsher penalties for repeat offenders. Local animal advocates are now pushing for greater education and intervention resources to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
