Some rescue stories begin with heartbreak, but thanks to compassionate people and dedicated supporters, they can still end in hope. BG’s story started on a rural road in Texas when a witness saw something unthinkable: a dog being dumped from a truck and left behind.
The kind witness quickly called BARK Rescue and stayed with the dog until help arrived. That act of kindness may have saved his life. To honor the family who stepped up when BG needed it most, BARK Rescue named him after them — BG, for the Blessingame family.

A Dog in Pain
When rescuers arrived, BG was in rough condition. He had no microchip, had not been neutered, and was suffering from several painful medical issues. Worst of all, he tested positive for heartworms, a dangerous and potentially fatal disease if left untreated.
BG also had entropion, a painful condition where the eyelids roll inward and irritate the eyes, requiring expensive, complex surgery. On top of that, he suffered from severe flea dermatitis, leaving his skin so inflamed that he would cry out when someone tried to touch him.
Despite everything he had endured, BG remained gentle and hopeful. He was a short, stocky, lovable 48-pound chunk of a dog who clearly just wanted someone to love.
Eight Months of Healing at BARK Rescue
BG spent the next eight months at BARK Rescue, receiving the care he needed to recover. During that time, he underwent heartworm treatment, surgery to correct his entropion, and treatment for his painful skin condition. Slowly but surely, BG began to feel better.
Throughout his recovery, BG was also a recipient of iHeartDogs Care Packages, which provide rescued dogs with essentials like food, blankets, toys, and treats during their time in shelter care. Those small comforts help dogs like BG stay nourished, enriched, and emotionally supported while they wait for their second chance.

Finally, after months of treatment and patience, BG received the news everyone had been hoping for: he tested heartworm negative!
BG was finally ready for the next chapter.
A Life-Changing Ride
In October, BG boarded the iHeartDogs Rescue Road Trip transport headed for Colorado Springs, Colorado. His negative heartworm test came just in time to secure him a spot on BARK’s latest rescue van, sponsored by iHeartDogs’ donors and Hero VIP members.
The Rescue Road Trip program helps dogs from overcrowded and high-risk shelters in the South travel to areas where more families are waiting to adopt. For many dogs, this ride north is the difference between an uncertain future and a loving home.
For BG, that life-changing ride didn’t take long to pay off. Shortly after arriving in Colorado, BG was adopted into a loving forever home! The dog once abandoned on a rural road now spends his days as a cherished companion, which is exactly the life every dog deserves.
