Police Dog Saves Lost Toddler in Heartwarming Body Cam Moment

1 day ago 7

A heart-touching scene unfolded in Michigan when a police dog helped rescue a missing three-year-old boy, and the moment the officer realized the child was safe was captured on body cam — and it’s sure to move you.

The situation began on the evening of March 4th in Geneva Township. Authorities received a call that a young child had wandered away from home, as shared by South Haven Area Emergency Services. In response, the police sent out a search team, which included Deputy Eric Calhoun and his loyal K-9 partner, Kuno.

As soon as they reached the area, Kuno picked up on a small footprint near the house. That clue led the team toward a nearby body of water, less than a mile away. It was a close call — they discovered the little boy just 50 yards from the water.

Shortly after being released, he became overcome by rage and frustration and began violently wailing on his poor, trembling, frightened dog. It's clear that this man's violent tendencies didn't decrease after serving his time.

While Kuno and Deputy Calhoun were following the trail, another unit used drones to scan the area from above. The boy was located around the same time by both the drone team and Kuno. Thankfully, having an officer on the ground made all the difference. Their timing might have been just what saved the child from danger.

In the body cam footage, you can see Officer Calhoun, Kuno, and another officer quickly approaching the water’s edge. When they spot the child, Officer Calhoun calls out warmly, “Hey buddy!”

The frightened boy, clearly shaken, cries and calls for his mother. As he’s gently picked up, Officer Calhoun softly comforts him, letting him know that everything is going to be alright.

Sheriff Daniel Abbott of Van Buren County later reflected on how serious the situation could have been: “If we weren’t to locate that kid when we did, you’re talking three, four or five minutes, that kid might have wandered in one of those ponds, we’d have a different outcome.”

This wasn’t the first time Kuno had played the role of hero. Since starting his service in 2017, he has helped find five missing children. His actions have brought hope and relief to several families, and his dedication continues to shine.

Sheriff Abbott praised the teamwork and commitment between Officer Calhoun and Kuno. He said, “This is a deputy on his days off, sets up trainings with other agencies so he can stay on point with this dog.” The sheriff believes that Officer Calhoun is working hard to make Kuno “the number one dog in the state of Michigan, if not the nation.”

Thanks to Kuno’s sharp instincts and the quick response of the officers, what could have ended in tragedy turned into a story of hope and relief — a powerful reminder of how incredible our four-legged heroes can be.
