Lost Pet Memorial From Hurricane Helene Miraculously Recovered in Lake Lure

In Lake Lure, North Carolina, the community has been moved to tears after a piece of the cherished Rainbow Bridge memorial—swept away during Hurricane Helene—was unexpectedly recovered nearly a year later. For many pet lovers, the discovery feels like a miracle, offering comfort and renewed hope.

The Rainbow Bridge, a feature of the town’s Flowering Bridge, was a sanctuary where grieving owners could leave collars, leashes, and tags to honor pets who had crossed the “rainbow bridge.” It was more than a physical structure—it was a place of remembrance, healing, and shared love. The hurricane’s destruction last year left the community heartbroken, believing their tributes had been lost forever.

Among them was WLOS General Manager Courtney Youngblood, who had placed the tags of her three dogs—Pugsley, Hemingway, and Johnny—bound together on a single leash. When the bridge washed away, so did her personal tokens of love. “They don’t care if you had a bad day, they make your day better,” Youngblood said of her dogs. “It’s just the definition of love for me.”

Pit Bull Used as Bait in Dogfighting

A young and sweet pit bull was found behind a warehouse in south Memphis with hundreds of bite marks and other severe injuries. Liam, as the rescuers named him, had been used as bait for dog fighting and his abusers are still at large.

Then, just one day before the anniversary of the storm, workers clearing sediment from a nearby channel discovered part of the Rainbow Bridge hidden beneath the mud. Photos posted online showed the recovered items cataloged for families to claim. Against all odds, Youngblood’s dogs’ tags appeared on the list as item number 51.

The moment she held them again was overwhelming. She described the experience as “a little bit of magic,” a reminder that even in loss, love has a way of finding its way back. The recovery was not only about returning physical items but also about restoring cherished memories and renewing a sense of peace for grieving families.

Volunteers have announced that all of the rescued collars, tags, and leashes will be carefully cleaned and preserved. Plans are already in motion for a new Rainbow Bridge memorial to open next spring, ensuring that the memories of beloved pets will continue to have a permanent and dignified resting place.

For Youngblood and others, the discovery is healing. Knowing that Pugsley, Hemingway, and Johnny’s tags will once again hang on a new memorial feels like a promise kept. And for the entire Lake Lure community, the return of these tokens serves as a reminder of resilience, hope, and the eternal bond between people and their pets.

The Rainbow Bridge will rise again—stronger, renewed, and filled with the same love it was built on, offering solace to all who visit to honor their four-legged companions.
