Ranch Dog Finds Missing Toddler After Night Alone in Desert

A 2-year-old boy from Arizona is safe at home today thanks to the heroic efforts of an unlikely savior—a loyal ranch dog named Buford. The toddler, Boden Allen, had wandered away from his parents’ home in the rugged northern Arizona high desert. As the sun set and temperatures dropped, the dangers of the wild crept in—most notably, the presence of two mountain lions reported nearby.

Despite immediate efforts by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue teams, hopes dimmed through the night.

The dry desert is not kind to the lost, and stories like Boden’s typically don’t end on a happy note. Megan Fitzgerald of the sheriff’s office noted how rare it is to see outcomes like this. “It’s not every day that we get to sit here and talk about a happy ending where the child was safe and located,” she said.

But fate had other plans—and a furry guardian angel. At first light, a rancher named Scotty Dunton noticed something unusual. His dog Buford was calmly sitting by the gate, and beside him was Boden. The little boy had somehow made it seven miles from home overnight, following the power line to Dunton’s ranch.

“Going down the driveway. My dog was sitting down there with the little kid—just brought him up from the horse pasture and brought him over to the gate and was just hanging out with him,” Dunton recounted. Boden, unfazed, told Dunton that he had slept under a tree during the night. When asked whether Buford had found him, the boy simply said, “Yep.”

Buford’s calm presence and gentle demeanor had likely saved Boden not only physically, but emotionally, providing comfort in a terrifying situation. It’s unclear what might have happened if Buford hadn’t been there, but thanks to this incredible dog, Boden is back where he belongs—home and safe.
