Have you ever asked your dog to wait for a favorite treat and watched them patiently hold back? Scientists studying 14 family dogs discovered something fascinating happening inside their brains during those moments of self-control. When the dogs resisted the temptation to grab a reward, their brain activity showed a pattern remarkably similar to one associated with self-control in humans. The findings suggest that waiting for a treat may involve more than simply following a familiar command. By measuring electrical activity in the dogs’ brains, researchers found signs that areas near the front of the head become more active when dogs are asked to restrain themselves. Although the study cannot reveal exactly what the dogs were thinking, it offers an intriguing glimpse into how their minds work. Researchers Put Dogs’ Patience to the Test To explore what happens when dogs resist temptation, researchers recruited 14 well-trained family dogs for a simple experiment. Each dog wore six small sensors attached to their head with gel, allowing scientists to record brain activity using electroencephalography, commonly called EEG. The process was noninvasive, meaning nothing needed to be impla...
