On April 14, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck San Diego, shaking the city and causing a brief moment of panic. But at the San Diego Zoo, something truly heartwarming happened. A group of elephants showed just how smart and caring animals can be. As the earth trembled beneath them, their natural instincts took over, and they worked together to stay safe.

Even though they didn’t understand exactly what was happening, they sensed danger—and knew how to respond. They created what experts call an “alert circle.” The adult elephants positioned themselves with their backs facing each other, forming a protective barrier. In the middle of the group stood the young calves, safely surrounded by the grown-ups.

About an hour later, a smaller aftershock hit the area, and once again, the elephants regrouped to make sure everyone was okay. Their loyalty to one another is truly inspiring.

“It’s so great to see them doing the thing we all should be doing — that any parent does, which is protect their children,” said Mindy Albright, a curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
