They Thought Their Dog Was Dead, But After 4-Years, Something Changed

For four years, Albania Sagarra lived with heartbreak. Her beloved maltipoo, Sugar, had vanished from their Miami neighborhood in 2021, and despite a desperate search and a $1,000 reward offer, Sugar was never found. What followed was a devastating phone call from a stranger who claimed he saw Sugar hit by a speeding car, traveling 70 to 80 miles per hour. Convinced she had died, the family mourned her loss and slowly moved on—until everything changed.

In a twist no one could have imagined, Sugar recently turned up outside a South Florida animal shelter. Weak, sick, and clearly neglected, she was nonetheless alive. When shelter workers scanned her microchip and contacted the Sagarra family, disbelief and emotion overwhelmed them.

“I’m just very happy and soaking up every moment with Sugar because this is like a resurrection I would have never imagined,” Sagarra said, holding back tears as she embraced her long-lost companion.

But the reunion was bittersweet. Sugar was no longer the playful, vibrant pup they had known. She was underweight and in poor condition, suffering from stage 4 heart disease and stage 4 kidney disease—along with a host of other health concerns. Her family now suspects that Sugar may have been abducted and mistreated during the years she was missing.

Though they don’t know how long she has left—maybe weeks, maybe months—Sagarra is determined to give Sugar the love and care she was denied. “She’s back where she belongs,” she said, “and I’m happy that at least the remainder of her days she’ll be with her family.”

As they focus on Sugar’s comfort and recovery, the family also wants answers. Sugar was left outside the shelter with no explanation. Who left her there? Where had she been all this time?

Those questions may take time to answer, but for now, the Sagarras are grateful for the second chance they’ve been given. And no matter how many days remain, Sugar will live them surrounded by the love she never stopped deserving.
