We took two trips to Washington DC and neither of them turned out as we had envisioned. Mom was in DC as a kid on a family vacation and many times as a flight attendant. Being only twenty five miles away, she wanted to show us DC and take some amazing photos. The above photo is the reflecting pool with the Capital in the background. This was our first attempt to see DC Sunday afternoon after Olivia’s trial.
It took a long time to drive there and our stay was short as it was ninety eight degrees and super humid. Mom was worried about us so we took two photos and drove back to our hotel which took an hour and a half for the twenty five mile trip, thanks to traffic. On the way back to the car we stopped for a picture at the Smithsonian. We were all bummed to have to give up but it was dangerously hot.
Our next trip was Monday after Nelson’s trial. It was worse than our first try! It took an hour and a half to get there, and then most of the roads were closed because of all the dignitaries being there for the Ukraine talks. Mom was frustrated to say the least. To add even more fun, it was getting dark, lightly raining, and cold for Mom, only sixty five degrees. We found a parking spot and headed out to the Washington Monument.
Off we went towards the Lincoln Memorial. Now for a stop at the big reflecting pool in front of Abe’s place.
Continuing with our Grand luck, the Memorial is under construction. We made it up the steps and found Abraham Lincoln. Lucky for us the late hour and rain kept most people away.
Here is a shot of the Reflecting Pond looking towards the Washington Monument. Mom packed my patriotic bandana and Nelson’s bow tie for photos but the weather told us to forget it and just keep moving.
We wanted to go to the Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials next. Following the signs, we ended up with a fence barrier. They are doing tons of construction and we had no idea how to get there with the walkway closed. Instead, we went back towards the car and saw the Korean War Memorial.
It was quite disappointing to make two trips and have different bad weather each time, roads closed, and attractions under construction as well. Almost back to the car we took a photo of the Lock Keepers House. Our hope was for more sites with photos like the Capital one but it was not to be. Now we have been there and Mom will probably never drive there again. It was not easy. But, we saw the nation’s capital and can say we have been there. Even the White House was impossible to get to so we went back to the hotel and had a late dinner in our nice room.
I’m joining my friends at Living Laughing and Barking in Our Backyard for their Nature Friday blog hop.
