Vet Rescues Puppy From Euthanasia And Gives Him A Forever Home

The topic of euthanasia in the animal world often sparks debate. While some believe it is humane to euthanize animals born with serious conditions, others insist that every life deserves a chance. One compassionate veterinarian in the U.K. recently proved just how powerful that second chance can be.

Dr. Oliver Reeve, a veterinarian and pharmacologist, encountered a heartbreaking situation when a 7-week-old Goldendoodle puppy was brought into his clinic one evening to be euthanized. The tiny pup had been born with a birth defect, and his owner, unable to manage his special needs, believed ending his life was the only option.

However, Dr. Reeve refused to let that happen. In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he wrote, “A 7-week-old puppy got brought into the clinic to be euthanised tonight. Very sad. Anyway, meet my new son.” With those simple words, he introduced the world to Toby — the puppy he had just saved and adopted.

Dr. Reeve’s act of compassion quickly went viral, with thousands of people around the world praising his decision. Many criticized Toby’s previous owner for even considering euthanasia, but the veterinarian offered a balanced perspective, choosing understanding over anger.

He explained that while euthanasia is difficult, it’s not always an act of cruelty. “People shouldn’t be shamed for seeking veterinary care and electing euthanasia or surrender,” he said. “Vets are not the police, and we don’t want people reluctant to see us because they fear judgment.”

The man's behavior shows the connection between animal abuse and other types of cruelty. He's already been jailed in the past for his violent history, but that obviously didn't address his underlying motivations for this kind of assault.

Dr. Reeve added that there are times when euthanasia is a compassionate decision, when an animal is suffering and no treatment can help. However, in Toby’s case, his condition was treatable, and the vet chose to take on the responsibility himself.

Shortly after adopting Toby, Dr. Reeve began his medical treatment. Toby underwent surgery to address his birth defect and made excellent progress. Dr. Reeve fondly referred to him as his “brave little man,” sharing updates about the puppy’s recovery online.

Before Toby came along, Dr. Reeve already had a lively household with a dog, a cat, a rat, and three rabbits. Toby quickly became part of the family, bonding especially with Danni, the resident dog. The two became inseparable, spending their days playing, napping, and enjoying the comfort of their newfound friendship.

Toby’s transformation from an unwanted puppy to a beloved family member captured the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Thanks to one vet’s compassion and refusal to give up, this little Goldendoodle now has a happy life ahead of him, full of love, care, and second chances.
