From the street below, it looked like nothing more than a few dirty scraps of cloth tangled on the corner of a rooftop. To most people passing by, the lifeless movement of what seemed like rags barely registered a second glance. But what they were really seeing was far more heartbreaking. Hidden in plain sight were two neglected dogs, Terry and his brother, silently suffering in isolation. Chained for more than two years, these poor animals had been enduring extreme weather, starvation, and complete abandonment—completely unnoticed by the world around them.

Terry and his brother lived through relentless heat, pouring rain, and biting cold. Over time, their once-shiny coats became tangled and filthy. Their fur grew long and matted, forming thick clumps that weighed them down and hid their true appearance. What used to be two happy dogs was now a pair of unrecognizable figures, barely clinging to the spirit they were born with.
Their presence was so obscure that many people walking by did not even notice them. Some thought they were simply discarded fabric caught on the rooftop. But despite being invisible to most, their suffering was very real.
Eventually, one kind-hearted neighbor could no longer bear the sight. They made a decision that would alter the lives of these two dogs forever. A call was placed to the local authorities, prompting immediate action. It was not long before a rescue team from West Coast Paws Dog Rescue arrived on the scene to investigate.
Zoë, one of the dedicated rescuers, recalled the emotional impact of that moment. Speaking to The Dodo, she said, “The dogs had incredibly matted fur. You can’t even begin to understand how they had been feeling up there for so long.”
The dogs were frightened and confused, but also visibly relieved to see humans offering kindness. Their ordeal was finally coming to an end.
The rescue team carefully transported Terry and his brother to the safety of the West Coast Paws shelter. There, the first step in their transformation began with something as simple yet profound as a bath and a haircut. The thick mats were shaved away, revealing the sweet faces and gentle eyes that had been hidden beneath years of neglect.
In a matter of hours, they were no longer just “rooftop dogs.” They were beautiful, expressive pups full of personality and potential. With a vet visit complete and a clean bill of health, both dogs were placed into the adoption program in hopes of finally finding a loving home.
While Terry’s brother was soon adopted, Terry remained at the shelter. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Despite his sweet demeanor and courageous past, Terry struggled to capture the attention of potential adopters.
Zoë explained the reason for the delay, noting, “We had Terry listed for adoption for almost seven months before we received any application for him. His age was really a factor in people not wanting to apply for him.”
Although the shelter team was heartbroken by the lack of interest, they never gave up hope. They knew the perfect match was out there, waiting to discover Terry’s incredible story.

That moment finally arrived when a couple named Lee and Danny stumbled upon Terry’s profile while browsing the West Coast Paws website. As they read about his journey and looked at his photos, they felt an instant emotional connection.
“We gravitated toward Terry partly because they were having trouble adopting him out. There was just something about him that sort of touched my heart,” Lee shared with The Dodo. “The little rags on the rooftop, then seeing him in the shelter all fluffy and happy—I figured I could give him a good life.”
Without hesitation, Lee and Danny reached out to the shelter. They knew Terry belonged with them.
Bringing Terry home was not a simple task. It required planning, coordination, and a bit of travel. Terry boarded two separate planes, accompanied by his compassionate caretakers Ariane and Tami, who ensured he was safe and comfortable throughout the trip.
“Thankfully, everything went really smoothly. All the flights were on time,” Ariane told The Dodo, reflecting on the successful journey.
When Terry finally landed, he was met by his new parents and a welcoming pile of toys waiting to be claimed. It was clear from the moment they met that this was where Terry was always meant to be.
In his new home, Terry was given a fresh start in every sense of the word—including a new name. From that day forward, he would be known as Teddy.
His transition into family life was seamless. Within days, Teddy was already forming deep bonds with Lee and Danny, as if he had been part of their lives all along.
“I couldn’t be happier. I’m just thrilled with how quickly he’s latched onto us. It’s going to be fun,” said Danny during their first moments together.
Despite being seven years old, Teddy’s energy and enthusiasm made him seem like a puppy discovering joy for the first time.
As the days passed, Teddy continued to thrive. His playful nature emerged, and his loving personality shone through. Gone were the days of isolation and sadness. In their place was a life filled with affection, attention, and the comfort of knowing he was truly home.

Danny expressed his excitement for what lay ahead, saying, “I think his future is one of a lot of human companionship. We’re just really so happy to have Teddy share the rest of his life with us as a part of our family.”
Teddy’s story is a powerful reminder that no dog is ever too old, too broken, or too forgotten to be loved. From the lonely rooftop where he was once mistaken for a pile of trash to the warmth of a home filled with laughter and care, Teddy’s journey is one of true resilience.
