If you have a dog chances are they follow you around the house quite often, perhaps even into the bathroom. From curiosity to pack mentality, let’s take a quick look at the reasons why dogs follow you into the bathroom.
1. They Love You
Some dogs are naturally clingy and want to be near you all the time, including bathroom breaks. It’s called velcro dog syndrome, and most of us find it quite endearing. They love you, and want to be close to their favorite person.
Although it’s usually quite harmless and not concerning on it’s own, if your dog is also exhibiting signs of separation anxiety when you’re out of sight such as pacing and whining, you’ll want to work on teaching them some independent behaviors so they don’t panic when you’re not around.
And remember — when it comes to following you into the bathroom they don’t have the same social norms we do, to them it’s completely normal to stay by your side.
2. They’re Curious
Dogs are curious by nature, and want to explore everything around them. And to them the bathroom is no different.
Do you keep the bathroom door shut when it’s not in use? Many of us do, and that leads to added curiosity for our four legged friends. Anything that seems “forbidden” or closed off with spark more curiosity.
The bathroom is also full of new scents and sounds for your dog, and they simply want to know what you’re up to. Not to mention those nice cool, comfortable floors many bathrooms have.
3. Pack Mentality
Now when I say dogs follow you into the bathroom because of pack mentality that doesn’t mean I’m going to get into being alpha and all that; it just means they have some pack mentality wired into their DNA.
In the wild there is safety and protection in sticking together, so staying in close proximity to their family or “pack” comes naturally. You likely stand by their side when they go to the bathroom, to them it’s normal to do the same for you.
