A Yorkshire terrier has gone viral after her dramatic transformation left even her owner speechless. What started as a dark brown-and-black pup is now a light blond dog that barely resembles her puppy self—and viewers are loving the glow-up.

The video, posted by @patriciaivyvo on June 17, begins with the pup as a young dog nestled in her owner’s arms. Her coat is dark and striking, the signature black-and-tan look common to many Yorkie puppies. But the clip then jumps forward to the present, where she’s seen lounging with a completely different appearance—her fur now a soft, pale blond. The caption reads: “I had no idea that Yorkies could change colors like that once they’ve grown out their puppy hair,” adding playfully, “and to think I almost named her Boba.”

According to Dr. Liza Cahn, a contributor to Embrace Pet Insurance, this type of coat transformation is not unusual in certain breeds like Yorkshire terriers. Speaking with Newsweek, she explained that coat changes are influenced by a mix of genetics, aging, and health. One common example is “progressive graying,” a genetic condition that causes dark coats to fade gradually over the dog’s first few years of life, often resulting in shades like silver, beige, or café-au-lait.

Other contributors to coat change include “color dilution,” which causes lighter pigment in the fur and can affect the nose and paw pads as well. However, in most cases, Yorkies go through their most significant coat change between 9 weeks and one year of age as their adult fur replaces their puppy fluff.

The American Kennel Club confirms that Yorkie puppies are generally born with black-and-tan coats. As they mature, the black often fades into lighter, more silvery hues. This gradual transformation is part of what makes the breed so unique—and sometimes surprising for first-time Yorkie owners.
