My boy is allergic to almost everything. He’s always been raw fed but still had skin allergies. Last year we did a 5 Strand Hair test and found out all of the foods that he’s allergic to. He now eats raw goat, beef, and fish with sardines and Omega 3 fish oil daily. He’s 10 years old and we now have his itchy skin under control.

Vet told me rather than go thru testing which is expensive and sometimes non-conclusive to switch out the protein source among better name brands…that by the time we finished a large bag allergies would flair up and I would know not to use that protein source. Beef and chicken were the culprits. So I stick to venison, lamb, whitefish and salmon varieties. I have two. A 90 pound girl and a 145 pound boy. So far it has been working for about a year and a half and no meds. Brands: Iams, Science Diet, Victor and Royal Canin. Good luck to anybody experiencing this. I wish you only the best.

Raw turkey and chicken, along with organs, etc. 30% kibble. His stool gets soft with raw beef so we limit it. Eggs, veggies, fruits, chicken broth, pumpkin, salmon, mackerel. Basically, he eats better than us.

Raw is my vote too lol. If you ever decide to attempt it, do your research and keep an eye on proper proportions of meat/bone/organs.In a pinch, lazy day, or if I can’t get the meats, I’ll use Honest Kitchen. Both the dehydrated (usually limited ingredients/grain free turkey or chicken) or even their HK Clusters (kibble).

Frequently Asked Questions About Feeding Cane Corsos with Allergies

  1. What are the most common food allergens for Cane Corsos?
Cane Corsos, like many large breeds, often develop sensitivities to common proteins such as beef, chicken, and dairy. Grains like wheat and corn, as well as soy, can also trigger allergic reactions. Identifying and eliminating these from their diet is crucial in managing food allergies effectively.

  2. How can I tell if my Cane Corso has a food allergy?
Symptoms of food allergies in Cane Corsos include excessive itching, ear infections, red or inflamed skin, gastrointestinal upset (vomiting or diarrhea), and chronic paw licking. If you notice any of these signs, consult your veterinarian to explore an elimination diet or allergy testing.

  3. What are the best protein sources for allergic Cane Corsos?
Novel proteins such as venison, duck, rabbit, and kangaroo are often recommended for dogs with food sensitivities. These proteins are less likely to have been previously introduced in your dog’s diet, reducing the risk of triggering an allergic reaction.

  4. Are grain-free diets good for Cane Corsos with allergies?
Grain-free diets can help some dogs, especially if they’re sensitive to corn, wheat, or soy. However, not all dogs with food allergies benefit from grain-free food. It’s important to identify the specific allergen before switching diets and to ensure the grain-free food is well-balanced.

  5. Is a limited-ingredient diet (LID) effective for Cane Corsos with food allergies?
Yes, limited-ingredient diets are highly effective in managing food allergies. These diets typically contain a single protein source and minimal ingredients, making it easier to pinpoint the allergen. They are often recommended during an elimination trial.

  6. Can homemade meals help with food allergies in Cane Corsos?
Homemade diets can be beneficial because you have complete control over the ingredients. However, they must be nutritionally balanced. Working with a veterinary nutritionist ensures your Cane Corso receives all essential nutrients while avoiding allergens.

  7. Are there any hypoallergenic commercial dog food brands recommended for Cane Corsos?
Brands like Natural Balance, Hill’s Prescription Diet, Royal Canin Hypoallergenic, and Blue Buffalo Basics offer hypoallergenic or limited-ingredient formulas suitable for dogs with food allergies. Always choose a brand that lists a novel protein and avoids common allergens.
