Bully Beds Orthopedic Bolster Bed Review: Is It Worth It?

If you’ve ever spent hours scrolling through dog beds online, only to end up with something that flattens out in a month or gets totally ignored by your pup, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, done that, and cleaned up the fur. I’ve heard A LOT of great things about Bully Beds, so when offered the chance to try one I jumped on it. 

A premium orthopedic bed designed for large breeds and senior dogs sounded promising, but would it live up to the hype? 

In this review, I’m diving into what makes the Bully Beds Orthopedic Bolster Bed worth considering, especially if you’re looking for long-term comfort, solid support, and a pup-approved design.

Bully Beds made a name for itself by catering to large breeds and senior dogs—two groups that often get overlooked in the comfy bedding department.

They have a few different bed styles all geared towards big pups, ranging from the Original Bully Bed (with one bolster) to round Sherpa-topped beds. I picked the Orthopedic Bolster bed for Freya because she likes to have something to lean against when she’s sleeping. 

Like all of their beds, the Orthopedic Bolster Bed is designed with high-density orthopedic foam, plush bolsters, and durable materials to support dogs who need extra joint care… or just a ridiculously cozy place to nap.

It’s available in a few sizes (I went with the XL. I’ll explain why below), but even the largest one is crafted to look nice in your living room.

As I mentioned above (like literally two second ago), I went with the XL size for Freya. I could have gotten away with a large, or maybe even a medium, if I was just thinking about her size. But Freya doesn’t sleep curled up. Ever. She either sleeps with her legs out in front of her or on her back or side with every leg stretched out to the far reaches of the Earth. So, the XL was just the ideal size for her. 

The first thing I noticed when the bed arrived, obviously, is the packaging, since it’s literally the first thing you see. The bed arrived in a tall box (which my cats have since claimed) with the bed vacuum-sealed inside. Check out the pic below to see what I mean. 

Once I got it all opened up (you have to be careful because you don’t want to accidentally slice the dog bed, but you will need scissors or a knife to get through all of the plastic), I was kind of shocked by how quickly it sprang into being (I was going to say “inflated,” but that’s not really the right word since it’s solid, and “sprang into being” just has a lovely mystical sound to it, doesn’t it?). 

That said, technically you do need to give it a good 24 hours or so for it to fully reform. I swear there’s a word for this that I’m forgetting, but you know what I mean. 

Another thing that’s hard not to notice is just how insanely comfortable this bed is. How comfortable, you ask? So comfortable that my son said he wished they made one big enough for him!  Too bad Bully Beds doesn’t make human dog beds! 

So, this was actually a bit of a shocker. The moment it finished expanding (like most memory foam products, it comes vacuum-sealed), Freya jumped right on her new bed.

She usually needs a lot more coaxing and time to get used to it, especially with softer beds. In her defense, we haven’t really bought her many for a long time.

First, she ate every bed I bought her when she was a puppy (and a toddler, a preschooler, an adolescent…basically, she only stopped destroying them a few years ago).  I only bought her the elevated beds that are super hard to destroy, so she got used to those. 

Second, she’s always had her own sofa during the day, and she slept with my mom at night. But as she gets older, it’s getting harder for her to jump up on the couch and bed, especially at night when she’s a bit achy from a busy day chasing chipmunks. So, she’s been sleeping on the floor on a pile of blankets instead.

I wanted to get her something that was similar to a sofa, low enough to the ground that it’s easy to get on and off of, and supportive enough for her aging bones. The Bully Beds Orthopedic Dog Bed with Bolsters fit all three criteria. 

I still think of her as my puppy, but Freya will be 9 this month, so she’s technically a senior dog.  And while she’s still got plenty of zoomies in her, her joints don’t bounce back quite like they used to. That’s where orthopedic support becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity.
