Dog Possibly Thrown From Bridge Is Later Discovered On A Rooftop

5 hours ago 1

When employees arrived at a Kansas City distillery early that Saturday morning, they expected a normal start to their day. Instead, they were met with a sight that stopped them in their tracks. High above the ground, on top of an outdoor tent, a young shepherd mix stood frozen in fear. His body looked tense, his movements uncertain, and his eyes seemed to search for a way out. It was clear he had been through something frightening, and no one could immediately explain how he ended up there.

The discovery quickly turned into a mystery. Staff at J. Rieger & Co. reviewed surveillance footage from the night before, hoping for answers. What they saw was difficult to watch. The dog appeared to fall onto the tent late Friday night. From there, he wandered across the tent and part of the roof, alone in the darkness as a harsh storm rolled through.

Rain poured down. Winds pushed against the structure. Yet the frightened pup kept pacing, searching for safety in a place that offered none.

Some employees feared the worst. Based on the footage and nearby surroundings, they suspected the dog may have been thrown from a bridge close by. The fall likely left him shaken and disoriented, making his long night even more distressing.

By morning, he was still there.

Distillery hospitality manager Susan Stone Li described the moment they found him as shocking. The dog’s body language said everything. He was tense, unsure, and clearly overwhelmed after hours of fear and exposure.

But what happened next showed just how much compassion can change everything.

The team quickly came together to help. They carefully set up a ladder and used pieces of chicken to gently coax the dog closer. It took patience. It took calm voices. Slowly, the frightened pup began to trust them.

With help from Kansas City’s animal services, the rescue was successful. The dog was finally brought down to safety. On the rooftop, muddy paw prints told the story of his long night. Each step marked the path of a scared animal simply trying to survive.

A Safe Landing and a Fresh Start

In a twist of fate, the dog had landed in a place filled with people who truly cared. The distillery is known for being dog-friendly. It is even home to Pepper, a rescue pup belonging to the co-founder.

That spirit of compassion made all the difference.

Staff members felt a strong connection to the dog. He had endured something terrifying, yet he had also found his way to people who would not turn him away.

After the rescue, the pup was taken to KC Pet Project, where he received medical care and a full evaluation. At around one year old, he still has so much life ahead of him. The shelter gave him a meaningful name: Rieger, in honor of the place where he was found and saved.

Though he remains a bit cautious, it is easy to understand why. Trust takes time, especially after such a traumatic experience. Still, his caregivers see hope in him. Beneath the fear is a gentle, resilient dog waiting to feel safe again.

Now fully vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered, Rieger is ready for his next chapter. He is no longer the frightened pup pacing alone in a storm. He is a survivor with a chance at a loving home.

And this time, his story is headed somewhere warm, steady, and full of care.

@kcpetproject Overnight Friday, March 6th, a young Shepherd mix found himself on the tent covering the outdoor garden bar at @J. Rieger & Co. The 1-year-old dog spent all night walking across the tent and even part of the roof to ride out a nasty storm. When staff arrived the next morning, they immediately called Kansas City Animal Services, who safely got him down and brought him to KC Pet Project. After completing his 5-day stray hold, we gave this dog a name that honors the place that helped save him. Rieger. ❤️ This week, Lucy Rieger and her two sons visited the shelter to meet him! Rieger is still a little unsure at the shelter, but after everything he’s been through, we know he has an incredible future ahead. Rieger is currently available for adoption at the KC Pet Project – Main Campus in Swope Park. #animalshelter #rescuedog #rescuestory #shelterdogs #dogs ♬ The Champion – Lux-Inspira
