Garbage Truck Crew Rescues Puppy From Trash Can and Gives Him a New Life

Sometimes, a single unexpected moment can mean the difference between life and death. What began as a routine trash collection route through Milwaukee turned into a remarkable rescue when sanitation workers stumbled upon a heartbreaking sight hidden inside a garbage bin. Nestled among the refuse was a severely malnourished dog who appeared to have been abandoned and forgotten. Weak, hungry, and in desperate need of help, the gentle pup’s future looked uncertain. Fortunately, a rare twist of fate placed him directly in the path of compassionate people who refused to leave him behind.

Back in April, garbage truck driver Naz Nalls and his partner, Omar, were making their usual rounds through the city. The day had been moving along like any other, with trash bins being lifted, emptied, and compacted as part of their daily routine. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Then something happened that almost never does.

As one garbage bin was being attached to the truck, it unexpectedly fell off before it could be emptied. While it may have seemed like a minor inconvenience at first, that unusual moment turned out to be lifesaving.

When Nalls looked inside the fallen bin, he was stunned by what he saw.

Curled up inside was a frail, severely undernourished dog. Despite his condition, the dog greeted the workers with a friendly demeanor, as though he knew he had finally been found. His ribs were visible, and he appeared exhausted from whatever hardships had led him there. Yet his gentle nature remained intact.

Nalls immediately realized the dog needed help.

“It was kind of destiny,” he later reflected, noting that bins rarely ever fall off before being dumped. Had the process gone as usual, the outcome could have been tragic.

The workers quickly contacted their supervisor, Alex Halverson, who was already on his way to the scene. When he arrived, he could see just how hungry the dog was.

Fortunately, Halverson had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with him. The starving pup eagerly accepted the food, finally getting a much-needed meal after what was likely a long period without proper care.

A New Beginning for PJ

After rescuing the dog, Halverson transported him to MADACC, Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission. There, the dog received medical attention, nourishment, and a safe place to recover. As part of the shelter’s standard protocol, he was placed in foster care while staff worked to ensure he regained his strength.

Over time, the dog’s transformation was remarkable.

The once-emaciated animal began gaining weight, rebuilding his health, and enjoying the comfort and security he had been missing. What started as a heartbreaking situation slowly became a story of hope.

Meanwhile, Halverson could not stop thinking about the dog he had helped save.

When the opportunity arose, he was given first consideration for adoption. The timing felt perfect. He had already been considering adding a second dog to his family, and the bond formed during the rescue made the decision easy.

The grateful pup officially found his forever home.

Halverson named him PJ, inspired by the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that helped comfort and nourish him during those critical first moments after being found.

Today, PJ’s life looks very different from the one he knew inside that garbage bin. Instead of facing hunger and uncertainty, he enjoys the love, safety, and companionship of a family that refused to ignore him.

What began as an ordinary day collecting trash became a powerful reminder that sometimes the smallest twist of fate can change a life forever. Thanks to a fallen garbage bin and a group of compassionate workers, PJ got the second chance he desperately needed.
