Eric & Peety: How a Rescue Dog Saved a Man’s Life

When life feels overwhelming, a little love and support can make all the difference. For Eric O’Grey, that support came in the form of Peety, a rescue dog who transformed his world in ways he never imagined. Their story is a powerful reminder of the life-changing bond between humans and animals, showing how mutual love and care can bring healing, hope, and second chances.

At 51 years old, Eric’s life was spiraling downward. He weighed 340 pounds and battled serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. His doctor delivered a grim warning: without major changes, Eric’s time was running short. Feeling lost and desperate, Eric turned to a nutritionist, who gave him an unexpected piece of advice — adopt a dog. A four-legged companion, she explained, could help him build routine, stay active, and rediscover joy.

That’s when Eric met Peety, a middle-aged, overweight rescue dog who had been abandoned by his previous family. From the very beginning, Eric felt an undeniable connection. In many ways, they were mirrors of each other — both carrying extra weight, both overlooked, and both in need of a fresh start.

Together, Eric and Peety began a journey that would change them forever. They started with short daily walks, eventually increasing their distance and pace as they grew stronger. Eric shifted to a plant-based diet, while Peety enjoyed healthier meals and exercise by his side. Slowly but surely, the pounds came off. Over the course of a year, Eric lost an incredible 140 pounds, while Peety shed 25.

But their transformation wasn’t only physical. Eric gained confidence, happiness, and a sense of purpose he hadn’t felt in years. He made new friends, built a community, and even found love. Peety, once sad and abandoned, became a joyful, affectionate dog who radiated warmth and love to everyone around him.

In 2015, tragedy struck when Peety passed away from cancer. Though Eric was devastated, he carried forward the lessons his beloved dog had taught him. Peety’s love had given him not just a healthier body but a healthier outlook on life. Inspired by their journey, Eric became a certified running coach, guiding others on their own paths to wellness. He also became a passionate advocate for rescue animals, sharing his story to show how adopting a pet can save two lives — the animal’s and the human’s.

Dogs Killed Following Domestic Dispute

The man's behavior shows the connection between animal abuse and other types of cruelty. He's already been jailed in the past for his violent history, but that obviously didn't address his underlying motivations for this kind of assault.

Their story gained international attention in 2016 through the short film Eric & Peety, part of the Mutual Rescue initiative. The film touched millions of hearts, highlighting the extraordinary healing that comes from the simple, unconditional love of a pet.

Today, Eric continues to honor Peety’s legacy by living his best life and encouraging others to consider adoption. Their story proves that sometimes the greatest medicine doesn’t come from a doctor’s office, but from the bond between a human and their dog.
