Being a dog isn’t always as carefree as it seems, especially for those who haven’t had the luck of finding a loving home. Many dogs face life on the streets, enduring tough conditions, while others end up in shelters, which, despite the best efforts of staff, can still feel overwhelming and isolating. For some, the stress of such environments leads to deep anxiety, even depression. This is the unfortunate reality for Rascal, a sweet dog who has been caught in the cycle of abandonment and longing for a place to call home.
Rascal’s journey began when he was abandoned by an Orange County rescue at a boarding facility in Rowland Heights, California. For the past two years, he has waited patiently in a kennel, dreaming of the day someone would choose him. But that day never came. Facing limited resources, the facility planned to send Rascal and several other dogs to a local shelter, where his future would have been uncertain.
Thankfully, Samantha Redline, founder of Kennel Eviction Rescue (KER), stepped in. Her nonprofit focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating neglected animals, and she quickly took Rascal under her wing. Determined to find him a forever home, Redline tirelessly promoted his story. After only a few days, a woman noticed Rascal and decided to meet him. They even worked with a professional trainer to help Rascal transition into his potential new home.
“At first, everything seemed to be going well,” Redline explained in an interview. “She was working on a crate training schedule and even got him a flirt pole to help him burn off energy.” The two bonded over hikes and spent entire days together, and it seemed like Rascal’s long wait was finally over.
But then, the dream unraveled. KER received a message from the adopter explaining she no longer had the time to care for him. Redline was shocked, knowing Rascal’s demeanor. “It all surprised us because Rascal settles better than any of our other dogs,” Redline said. “He’s playful, loves chasing toys, and is an excellent hiking companion. He’s a great companion overall.”
Since returning to the shelter, Rascal has struggled to cope. He spends his days pacing in his kennel, looking as though he’s waiting for someone to come back for him. He’s even started barking, a behavior that’s uncharacteristic for him, signaling his frustration and sadness.
To help Rascal find the loving home he deserves, KER shared his story on TikTok. “Rascal needs a home, preferably without other animals, though he does well with caged pets like reptiles or bunnies,” Redline said. “He gets along with both men and women, but he needs someone patient. At 6 years old, he’s not overly active but still loves playtime and daily walks.”
