A shocking animal cruelty case out of Raleigh, North Carolina, has led to the arrest of a woman and the rescue of over 100 dogs living in deplorable conditions. Authorities say the dogs were discovered at a suspected puppy mill, where they had been neglected, underfed, and confined in filthy surroundings.

The woman at the center of the case, Aurora Garcia-Moso, has been charged with six counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals. Animal control officers reported that a total of 101 dogs and 21 chickens were surrendered from the property.

The conditions inside the puppy mill were described as heartbreaking. Many of the dogs were living in their own waste, without bedding, toys, or even basic shelter. According to rescuers, some of the dogs had never felt a blanket before.

“These guys did not have a blanket until last night, or a toy,” said Kira Krotboth with Pips Rescue. “They were covered in their own poop, everywhere.”

Fortunately, several rescue groups have stepped in to help give these dogs a fresh start. The SPCA of Wake County took in 15 dogs and puppies, including a mother with two newborns, several older puppies, and adult and senior dogs. Other rescues are also working to help place the remaining animals.

In an effort to help the dogs begin their recovery, volunteers at the SPCA organized a “spa day” to give the rescued pups a much-needed bath, fresh air, and some gentle affection—likely the first many of them have ever experienced.

Though the trauma these animals endured will take time to heal, the outpouring of community support has been swift and heartwarming. Rescue organizations are hopeful that with medical attention, stability, and love, these dogs can find new lives in forever homes.

As the investigation continues, officials are urging the public to report suspected cases of neglect or illegal breeding operations. The arrest and rescue serve as a reminder of the importance of adopting responsibly and supporting organizations working to protect animals in need.
