Troubling Case of Animal Neglect in Wilton, New York

Authorities in Wilton, New York, have filed multiple charges of animal neglect against two women after uncovering dozens of animals living in highly disturbing conditions. The women were identified as 72-year-old Nancy Kenny and her 32-year-old daughter, Rachael Furman. Both now face accusations of animal cruelty, including failing to provide proper food, care, and safe living arrangements for the creatures found on their property.

Investigators reported that the residence on Louden Road contained an alarming number of animals. Inside the home, they discovered eight dogs, four cats, two chickens, a duck, a rooster, and a rabbit. The conditions were described as extremely unsanitary, with dangerously high ammonia levels present. Outside, authorities uncovered 14 more chickens, three ducks, two turkeys, and a pig. The findings revealed both overcrowding and prolonged neglect, raising serious concerns about the health and safety of the animals.

The case began in July after a concerned neighbor noticed troubling signs regarding one of the dogs and reported the situation to police. Following this tip, officers conducted several visits to the property, collected evidence, and confirmed the poor living conditions before pressing charges. The involvement of the community proved essential, as the neighbor’s decision to speak up ultimately saved the animals from continued suffering.

After their removal, the animals were placed into safe environments where they could begin receiving proper care. The dogs, cats, and rabbit were taken to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter, while the farm animals were placed in foster homes. Officials later confirmed that the house itself was condemned due to its unsafe state.

This case emerges during a troubling rise in reports of animal cruelty across Saratoga County and the wider Capital Region. Advocates stress that cases like this highlight the importance of community awareness and timely reporting. Without early intervention, many neglected animals may continue to suffer in silence. Kenny and Furman were released on appearance tickets while awaiting further legal proceedings, but the animals they left behind are finally receiving the safety, food, and care that they were previously denied.
