Chief may technically be an English Bulldog, but the people who know him best have proposed a slightly different genetic breakdown: “50% English Bulldog, 50% house goblin.” Spend a little time with him, and the description starts making perfect sense. The wonderfully wrinkled rescue dog snores with impressive volume, communicates through mysterious gremlin noises, considers punctual meal service a basic human responsibility, and generally moves through life at a speed somewhere between a shuffle and a complete stop. Introduce the sound of a treat bag, however, and Chief suddenly discovers athletic abilities previously unknown to science. The estimated 5- to 7-year-old is currently with Harley’s Haven Dog Rescue after being surrendered to a shelter. His arrival wasn’t quite as funny as the personality that would soon emerge. Chief came into rescue with skin in rough condition and needed some extra care before he could start feeling like himself again. Fortunately, a little TLC and the comfort of a foster home worked wonders.
