Life on the streets is never kind to animals, especially to those who have no one looking out for them. For one dog in New Orleans, survival meant eating whatever he could find — even if it wasn’t food.

When rescuers from the Southern Animal Organization received a call about a stray dog in desperate condition, they rushed to help. What they found broke their hearts. The Weimaraner mix, later named Alex, was skin and bones, weak from starvation, and barely able to move.

They immediately brought him to Vermilion Parish’s Rabies Animal Control, where an X-ray revealed something shocking — Alex had been eating rocks and twigs just to stay alive. The rescuers couldn’t believe the extent of his suffering, but they were determined to give him a fighting chance.

With proper food, hydration, and medical care, Alex slowly began to regain his strength. His eyes, once dull and lifeless, started to shine again.

During his recovery, a woman named Diane Lundeen took Alex in as a foster. At first, she thought it would only be temporary — a safe place for him to heal before finding a forever home. But as the days turned into weeks, Diane realized Alex had already found his home… with her.

A family in Seattle dropped their dog, a black lab named Mitch, off at a local kennel one day, not expecting anything unusual to occur. But Mitch's stay at the kennel ended with an employee brutally kicking and punching him - to the point of death.

Under her care, Alex’s transformation was remarkable. His ribs disappeared beneath a healthy coat of fur, and his tail wagged constantly. He went from a timid, broken dog to a joyful companion who loved to play and cuddle.

Diane’s compassion gave Alex not just a second chance but a whole new life. He now spends his days with his dog siblings, running around the yard and basking in the love that was once unimaginable to him.
