Senior Dog Gets Unexpected Note After 660 Days In Shelter

1 month ago 13

Meet Snoopy, a sweet senior dog who dreams of finding his forever home. Snoopy has spent almost two years charming the hearts of volunteers at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society (BFHS). Despite this, he is still searching for a permanent family, and it’s puzzling to everyone why he hasn’t found one yet. Snoopy stood out among the other dogs at BFHS due to his unique situation. He is a senior dog battling Cushing’s disease, which affects his hearing and vision. This made him extra special to the BFHS volunteers, but potential adopters saw him differently.

“This gives him problems with his hearing and his vision,” BFHS volunteer Julie Saraceno explained in an Instagram Reel. “He’s also a senior dog. Because of these things, he’s getting overlooked.” Volunteers like Saraceno, who adored Snoopy, hoped he would find a loving foster or adoptive home soon after his arrival. But as days turned into months, Snoopy watched his fellow shelter dogs leave while he stayed behind.

When Snoopy reached his 600th day at the shelter, Saraceno and the other volunteers were heartbroken that the sweet, elderly dog was still there. Snoopy was sad, too, but he cherished being around his BFHS friends.

“Even though Snoopy has been a shelter dog for over 600+ days, he still finds a way to smile about the little things,” Saraceno shared in an Instagram post. “He loves being outside and soaking up the sun, wandering around the play yard and sniffing … the grass.” Snoopy’s joyful spirit caught the attention of BFHS’s social media followers. Some sent in adoption applications, while others sent him gifts.

From plushies to blankets, Snoopy appreciated all the presents. But one day, he received something truly special that money couldn’t buy. An 11-year-old dog lover named Emmy, one of Saraceno’s social media followers, sent Snoopy a heartfelt letter.

“Dear Snoopy, I’m wishing you [the] best of luck finding a home,” the note read. “I see you on Instagram, and every post makes me so sad because you deserve a loving home. [You’re] so lucky to be at such a great shelter, though. Remember that [disability] does not mean disposed [of]. Just looking at your face tells me [you’re] a kind soul. Again, I’m wishing you the best for the rest of your life. I wish I could adopt you myself, but I’m [an] eleven-year-old. [You’re] such a handsome boy, and I hope you like the stuffy and treats. Sending hugs, Emmy.” The letter, along with the other generous donations, made Snoopy feel incredibly loved. However, his age and medical needs meant he needed a specific kind of home, and no one seemed to fit the bill.

After over 660 days at the shelter, a local foster-based rescue called Forgotten Dogs Rescue offered to help Snoopy. They promised to find him a loving foster home while continuing to search for his forever family. For the first time in years, Snoopy would get to sleep on a couch instead of in a kennel.

Snoopy’s friends at BFHS were thrilled about his new opportunity, though saying goodbye was bittersweet. When it was time for him to leave, all of Snoopy’s friends gathered to give him one last hug. A few days into his new life as a foster dog, Snoopy was adjusting beautifully.

“Snoopy is loving being in a foster home,” Saraceno wrote in an Instagram post. “He’s making himself right at home. And he’s catching up on sleep.”

Snoopy’s friends at BFHS and Forgotten Dogs Rescue are eager for him to find his forever home. Until then, they are comforted knowing he is living a wonderful life and that the best is yet to come.
