Petey’s journey began in a small, overcrowded shelter where he became the longest resident. Despite his extended stay, Petey remained optimistic and joyful. The shelter staff, unable to find potential adopters for Petey, reached out to the SPCA of Wake County for assistance. They hoped that this organization could provide Petey with the exposure he needed to find a loving family.

The SPCA of Wake County, known for their dedication to animal welfare, welcomed Petey with open arms. Samantha Ranlet, SPCA of Wake County Spokesperson, recalls Petey’s arrival vividly. “As soon as he got here, he was yanking on the leash trying to get through the door,” Ranlet said. “He bounded into the building with such enthusiasm.”

Petey’s excitement was palpable from the moment he stepped into the SPCA. His playful and friendly nature quickly won over the staff. “He was super friendly from day one and very playful,” Ranlet shared. “We couldn’t believe that nobody wanted him.” The SPCA staff were determined to find Petey the perfect home, knowing that his affectionate personality and charming looks would make him a wonderful addition to any family.

To increase Petey’s chances of finding a home, the SPCA of Wake County immediately posted a photo of him on their social media platforms. They shared his story, hoping to attract the attention of potential adopters. The staff were concerned that Petey might be overlooked in favor of smaller dogs, as he had been in the past. However, their fears were soon put to rest.

Within a few weeks, Petey’s photo and story had captured the hearts of many. His sweet face and loving nature shone through the images shared by the SPCA. A family saw Petey’s picture and immediately fell in love. They knew that Petey was the missing piece to their family puzzle.

Petey’s transition to his new home was seamless. He quickly got comfortable, enjoying his cozy bed and the love of his new family. “He has his own cozy bed he loves to sleep in,” said his new family. Petey also enjoyed spending time in the yard, playing fetch, and giving his family plenty of kisses. His affectionate nature and playful spirit made him an instant favorite.

Petey’s new family couldn’t be happier with their decision to adopt him. “He’s the perfect addition. Petey is so loved and is opening up and showing us his beautiful personality. I am so happy to have him,” they shared. Petey’s new home was filled with joy and laughter as he bonded with his doggy brother and made new friends at the local dog park.

While Petey’s story had a happy ending, the SPCA of Wake County reminds us that many dogs remain in shelters for extended periods. These long-term residents often face challenges similar to Petey’s. Currently, there are an estimated eight to ten dogs in the care of the SPCA who have been searching for a home for over a year. “We’re rooting for them to find their people,” Ranlet said. “That’s what they deserve.”

A Dog Died in This Sitter's Care

Authorities have charged a New Jersey man with multiple counts of animal cruelty after they discovered several dogs in his care living in dangerous and violent conditions. Under current law, there is nothing preventing this man from owning, possessing, or caring for other animals in the future.

Certain breeds, such as black dogs like Labrador Retrievers, Shepherds, and Rottweilers, often face adoption challenges due to negative stigmas perpetuated by the media. These dogs are sometimes perceived as unfriendly, intimidating, or unphotogenic. Additionally, larger dogs, senior dogs, and pit bull breeds also struggle to find homes.

Petey’s story is a testament to the joy and love that shelter dogs can bring to families. His journey from the longest resident at a small shelter to a beloved family member highlights the importance of adoption. By choosing to adopt, you can help give wonderful animals like Petey the homes they deserve. Petey’s resilience and joyful spirit serve as a reminder that every dog, no matter how long they’ve been in a shelter, has the potential to bring immense happiness to their forever family.
