The best thing we have found for our massive chewer is Kong products. She cannot tear them up no matter how much she tries. The one in the middle with blue face is 6 mos old. Squeaker is broken but she cannot shred the body try as she does. Kong is very much worth the price!

My Maggie destroyed every toy. I took a long sock tied a knot in the middle. She played with it for months without tearing it up. She was running wild in the house one day; she picked up my sock in the excitement. She realized quickly it wasn’t hers and spit it out. She picked hers up and kept playing.

If mine can’t destroy the squeaker or disembowel the toy, they don’t want it. That said the Hartz Dura Play toys actually last quite awhile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Durable Toys for Dachshunds

  1. What makes a toy durable enough for a dachshund?
Dachshunds have strong jaws and a natural instinct to chew, especially since they were bred for digging and hunting. Durable toys for dachshunds should be made from tough materials like natural rubber, nylon, or heavy-duty fabrics. Look for toys that are chew-resistant and designed for aggressive chewers to ensure they last longer.

  2. Are there specific toy types that are best for dachshunds?
Yes. Chew toys, puzzle toys, and tug toys are great for dachshunds. Chew toys satisfy their need to gnaw, puzzle toys engage their smart and curious minds, and tug toys play into their interactive and feisty personalities. Avoid toys with small parts that can be chewed off and swallowed.

  3. Can durable toys help with my dachshund’s separation anxiety?
Absolutely. Interactive and durable toys like treat-dispensing puzzles or toys with hidden squeakers can keep your dachshund mentally stimulated and occupied when you’re not home. This can reduce boredom and destructive behavior associated with separation anxiety.

  4. How do I know if a toy is safe for my dachshund?
Always choose toys that are labeled non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals like BPA or phthalates. The toy should be appropriately sized for a small breed, with no detachable or breakable parts that can be ingested. Supervise initial play sessions to ensure safety.

  5. How often should I replace my dachshund’s toys?
Inspect your dog’s toys regularly for signs of wear and tear. Even the most durable toys can break down over time. If a toy is cracked, splintering, or losing pieces, it’s time to replace it to prevent choking or digestive hazards.

  6. What are some signs that my dachshund likes a particular toy?
If your dachshund carries it around, chews it frequently, or gets excited when you bring it out, it’s a favorite! Many dachshunds form attachments to toys that satisfy their chewing needs or those that mimic prey, like squeaky plush toys.

  7. Are plush toys suitable for dachshunds if they’re not labeled as ‘durable’?
They can be, but with caution. If your dachshund is a gentle chewer, plush toys can provide comfort and fun. However, for more aggressive chewers, only reinforced or specifically labeled “durable” plush toys should be used, as standard ones may be torn apart easily.
