Peanut had been left in a place where no puppy should ever have to struggle for survival. When 85-year-old Karl Korff learned that the young dog had been abandoned on an ant hill in Clovis, New Mexico, he went to help her. What he found was heartbreaking. Peanut had strips of hair missing, painful scabs covered her small body, and her damaged skin showed just how much she had endured. Yet beneath her injuries was a puppy still holding on, quietly looking toward the person who had come to rescue her. After decades of rescuing animals in desperate situations, he was no stranger to seeing dogs arrive in heartbreaking condition. “She has strips of hair missing. She has scabs all over her,” Korff told KOB 4. Korff has been helping dogs since 1976, when he began rescue work with his wife in Iowa before later continuing that mission in New Mexico.
