Sunday morning we got up and left home extra early to see the alebrijes on Raspberry Island in St. Paul. Mom doesn’t like crowds and we don’t want a bunch of people in our photos. Since we were going to St. Paul for nose work practice anyway, it was a perfect solution.
The “show” is called Alebrijes Keepers of the Island. It runs June 1st to October 26th this year. We were on the island just after eight in the morning and no one else was around, perfect! The show consists of sixteen of these papier-mâché, bright colored sculptures that range in size from four to sixteen feet in height.
As we entered the park area we were greeted by this big cat. Each sculpture has a plate with the name and a bit of what it is all about. Kitty does look happy.
Bright colors are our thing and one reason love these art creations.
This whole alebrijes concept began a fold art tradition around 1936. The art is a way to combine say a fish with a deer, something only seen in imagination. It is amazing they stand up to the weather being made of papier-mâché. Artists come by now and then to check on the creations and to make sure they are still in top condition.
We found this two headed dragon which is rather odd looking.
Here is another collage of sculptures. We got tired of all the posing so Mom took some photos of part of the art pieces without us.
All in all we spent about half an hour wandering the park, looking at each sculpture. Behind us is some kind of deer mix.
The giant toad is so weird but also amazing because of the size of it.
I’d say we had a whale of a good time checking out this handmade Mexican form of art. If you are in the Twin Cities, we think it is a fun thing to see and worth the time. Early morning was best for us since no one else was there at the time. Learning about a new art form is quite interesting.
