Fireworks Sent Mabel Running, but Her Community Brought Her Home

Few moments are more heartbreaking for a pet owner than watching a beloved companion disappear without knowing if they will ever come home. That was the painful reality for Russell “The Snake Chaser” Cavender after his young Border Collie, Mabel, vanished in the chaos of Fourth of July fireworks. For 18 anxious days, every unanswered lead and every passing hour tested his hope. Still, he refused to stop searching, while friends, neighbors, and strangers across the Grand Strand of South Carolina joined the effort.
