Jason Flatt’s Mission to Save Pit Bulls and Change Perceptions

People are often afraid of what they don’t understand, and Pit Bulls are one of the most misunderstood breeds in the world. Born in New York City, Jason Flatt grew up around Pit Bulls long before the negative stigma attached to them became widespread. In his childhood, they weren’t feared, they were family. That bond shaped his views for life, and after a personal tragedy, Pit Bulls gave him renewed purpose.

When Jason’s brother passed away, he relocated to Georgia. There, he found comfort in a Pit Bull puppy who quickly became his closest companion. Wanting to adopt another dog as a friend, Jason visited a local pound. What he saw changed him forever. Cage after cage was marked with an “X,” signifying the Pit Bulls inside were set to be euthanized. Heartbroken, Jason thought, This is horrible. Something should be done about that. Unlike many who turned away, Jason decided to act.

He began volunteering with animal control and various organizations, but he quickly realized not enough was being done to save Pit Bulls specifically. With determination, he proposed creating a breed-specific rescue. To his surprise, other rescuers told him it would never work and warned he would fail. Instead of discouraging him, their words only strengthened his resolve.

Jason founded Friends to the Forlorn Pit Bull Rescue in the Atlanta area. What started as one man’s mission has now grown into a thriving organization. For more than a decade, Jason and his team have saved countless Pit Bulls from euthanasia, neglect, and abuse. His work hasn’t been easy. As he says, he’s chosen to fight for a breed “people love to hate.” Yet he refuses to give up, because he sees in Pit Bulls something extraordinary: their resilience.

Despite cruelty and abandonment, Pit Bulls continue to show remarkable strength, forgiveness, and love. They do not hold grudges. Instead, they offer loyalty, affection, and joy to those who give them a chance. Jason often says that while people thank him for saving Pit Bulls, in reality, it’s the dogs who saved him. They gave him purpose, focus, and a way to turn grief into hope.

Pit Bull Used as Bait in Dogfighting

A young and sweet pit bull was found behind a warehouse in south Memphis with hundreds of bite marks and other severe injuries. Liam, as the rescuers named him, had been used as bait for dog fighting and his abusers are still at large.

Today, Friends to the Forlorn is more than a rescue—it’s a movement to change perceptions. By telling their stories and showcasing their true nature, Jason is breaking down harmful stereotypes. His mission is to remind the world that Pit Bulls, like all dogs, deserve love, respect, and second chances. His work is proof that compassion can not only change the lives of animals but also transform the hearts of people.
