The destructive floods that swept across southern China left behind scenes of heartbreak that reached far beyond damaged homes and submerged streets. As families hurried to escape the rising waters, countless animals were also caught in the unfolding disaster, many with nowhere safe to go. Flooding created heartbreaking scenes across the region. Officials reported that a zoo in Guigang lost track of more than 100 animals as floodwaters surged through the area. Among the missing were two zebras, four porcupines, and dozens of tropical birds, raising concerns about both the animals’ safety and the risks posed to nearby communities.

In Hengzhou, authorities also responded to reports that snakes had escaped from a local breeding farm. With floodwaters disrupting enclosures, officials urged residents to stay alert and avoid approaching any snakes they encountered. Emergency teams increased supplies of antivenom to prepare for possible snakebite incidents while sharing safety guidance with the public.

Rescuers Risk Their Lives to Save Trapped Pets

One of the most emotional rescue efforts unfolded in Nanning, within the Guangxi Region of South China, where an animal shelter was surrounded by floodwaters. Inside, approximately 200 cats and dozens of dogs depended entirely on their caregivers for survival.

As the water continued to rise, the shelter operator refused to abandon the animals. Strong currents made every rescue trip dangerous, but the dogs were carried to safety two at a time through rushing water. Each journey required patience, strength, and determination as rescuers carefully navigated the hazardous conditions.

Meanwhile, the cats instinctively sought higher ground. Many climbed onto rafters inside the shelter, balancing above the rising floodwaters while waiting for help. Though frightened and stranded, they remained safely out of the water until rescuers could reach them. Their natural instincts, combined with the dedication of the rescue team, helped prevent an even greater tragedy.

The rescue operation highlighted the extraordinary bond between people and animals during times of crisis. Every successful trip meant another life saved and another frightened animal given a second chance.

Across the flood-affected region, emergency crews launched an enormous rescue effort to protect communities overwhelmed by the disaster. Drones surveyed inaccessible areas from above while nearly 5,700 boats searched flooded neighborhoods for people and animals in need of assistance.

Rescuers battled swift currents, floating debris, and difficult weather conditions as they reached stranded residents. Their efforts helped evacuate approximately 130,000 people from dangerous areas before conditions worsened.

Recovery work continues throughout the affected communities. Road repair crews are restoring damaged infrastructure, while utility workers have already returned electricity to more than 60,000 homes. Although additional rainfall is expected in some areas over the coming days, authorities remain prepared to respond quickly if conditions change.
