Why Hiking Is One of the Best Forms of Enrichment for Dachshunds

I’ve been hiking with Dachshunds, and sharing our adventures online, for more than 15 years. When I started this blog, I thought I was simply sharing stories and photos with friends and family. Looking back, it became much more than that. I saw how much joy hiking brought my Dachshunds. Long before words like enrichment and fulfillment became common in the dog world, I instinctively knew these experiences mattered. My dogs weren’t just getting exercise. They came alive on the trail in a way I didn’t see anywhere else. Even then, I believed dogs deserved more than a life spent mostly inside the house or walking the same neighborhood streets every day. I wanted to show people what Dachshunds were capable of and inspire them to experience more of the world together. Over the years, one of the comments I’ve heard most often is that hiking is great exercise for dogs. I agree. I just don’t think that’s the biggest benefit.
