10 dogs rescued after being abandoned on side road near dam in local town

In Somerset County, Pennsylvania, a heartbreaking discovery led to the rescue of ten small dogs abandoned along a remote road near a dam. Thanks to swift coordination between local authorities and animal rescue organizations, the dogs are now safe and recovering in foster care.

The situation unfolded when members of the Somerset County Animal Response Team (CART) spotted a group of stray dogs scattered along a back road and near a dam. Recognizing the severity of the case, CART contacted the Pennsylvania State Police for assistance. Troopers were able to safely rescue eight of the dogs. Two more were later found by CART officials, including one that had become trapped inside a beaver dam. That dog was carefully extracted and brought to safety.

Following the initial rescue, Abby’s Angels Animal Haven, a rescue organization based in Bedford, was asked to step in. Without hesitation, they took in all ten dogs and began the extensive process of tending to their needs. According to the organization’s Facebook update, the dogs were in poor condition and required immediate grooming and medical care.

“It took over seven hours to get them cleaned up,” the post read. Each dog was bathed, had their matted fur shaved, nails trimmed, and was given their first deworming treatment and preventative care. After the cleanup, all ten dogs were placed in foster homes where they could begin their recovery in a safe, stable environment.

At this time, the dogs are not yet available for adoption. Abby’s Angels emphasized that they will only consider placement once each dog has received full veterinary care, health clearances, and the ongoing investigation into their abandonment is completed.

The rescue team, along with the public, is awaiting more details on how and why the dogs were abandoned in such a remote area. Investigators are working to determine who may be responsible, and charges may follow depending on the outcome.

For now, what matters most is that ten lives have been saved thanks to the collaboration between local responders and dedicated animal welfare workers. Their efforts turned a potentially tragic situation into a story of hope, healing, and a second chance for these innocent animals.
