Tears As Shelter Dog Places Paws On Kennel Bars, Begging Visitors To Adopt Him

No dog should have to grow up behind kennel bars, but for Deuce, a one-and-a-half-year-old pup in Florida, the shelter has become the only home he knows. After being abandoned by his previous owner, Deuce was taken in by the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) in Palm City, where the staff worked hard to make him feel loved and safe.

Deuce’s playful energy and affectionate spirit quickly made him a favorite among staff and volunteers. For two months, he waited patiently in his kennel, eyes tracking every visitor who passed by, his paws gently resting on the bars in a silent plea to be noticed.

Then, in November 2024, Deuce finally received the news he had been dreaming of—he was adopted. With hope in his heart, he left the shelter, eager to begin his new life. But only a month later, he was returned. His new owner, struggling with declining health, was no longer able to care for him.

Deuce greeted the shelter staff with his usual enthusiasm, jumping onto desks to say hello. But once back in the kennel, reality set in. He had been left behind again. Day after day, he stood at the kennel door, watching as families walked past, hoping each time that someone might choose him.

“Deuce almost always has his paws up on the cage. He is always tracking people with his eyes, eager to get any small amount of attention,” said Sarah Fisher, communications manager at HSTC.

Outside the kennel, Deuce is a different dog. He’s energetic, eager, and ready to love. But many visitors pass him by, unprepared for the dedication required to train a young, high-energy pup. Still, the shelter believes in him. He participates in daily walks, agility training, and play sessions in the yard. The staff is committed to giving him every opportunity to thrive.

“Our lead trainer, Heidi Fischer, states that he would be best in a home that can provide daily exercise and leash training,” Fisher added. “He has great engagement with using treats and is very trainable.”

Deuce continues to wait, paws on the bars, eyes filled with longing. He’s ready for a second chance—a home where someone will see the loving, loyal companion he is and never let him go again.
